The Eagles (7-0) used the two-headed running attack of Andre Callender (23 carries, 90 yards) and L.V. Whitworth (7 carries, 68 yards) to rack up 168 yards on the ground, and Callender also caught 10 passes for 91 yards and a score. Clarence Megwa had five catches for 56 yards, tight end Ryan Purvis hauled in five passes for 52 yards, and Rich Gunnell had seven receptions for 37 yards.
BC overcame 15 penalties - which accounted for 131 yards - by dominating the time of possession, controlling the ball for nearly 40 minutes.
"Our kids were so excited about coming out here and playing this football game," said BC head coach Jeff Jagodzinski. "It's a great rivalry. I told our guys we can't get to where we want to go unless we keep taking care of business every week."
The Notre Dame offense continued to sputter under the direction of starting quarterback Jimmy Clausen, who was just 7-for-20 passing for 60 yards and two interceptions, one of which went for a TD. Backup Evan Sharpley provided a spark, but was still just 11 of 29 through the air for 135 yards with one touchdown.
"I'm never big on blaming the quarterback for the lack of production on the offense," Irish head coach Charlie Weis said. "I think we had a chance in this game, but the bottom line is they won 27-14. If I sit there and say, 'God if we were just better on that snap, or if we would have hit this one pass or if we didn't get a penalty. ...' But the thing is, we did."
Notre Dame (1-6) was again essentially without a ground attack, as James Alrdidge carried five times for a team-high 17 yards. Robby Parris caught four passes for 94 yards and a score and tight end John Carlson had four catches for 29 yards for ND, which hosts 10th-ranked USC next Saturday.
Joe Brockington made 13 tackles and Brian Smith returned an interception for a touchdown to lead an Irish defense that did an admirable job despite being put in terrible position by the ND offense throughout.
After forcing a punt on the Irish's opening possession, BC wasted no time taking the lead. Ryan hit Purvis for a key third-down conversion, and on the next play, Whitworth scampered around the left end for a 52-yard gain before being knocked out of bounds inside the Irish 10. One play later, Callender went off left tackle for a seven-yard touchdown. BC missed the extra point, but had an early 6-0 lead.
The Eagles drove deep inside ND territory on their next two possessions, but came away with nothing to show for it. After a turnover on downs and a blocked field goal by ND lineman Trevor Laws, the score remained 6-0.
But a special teams blunder by Notre Dame set the Eagles up at the ND 40-yard line, and Ryan and the offense took advantage. Irish punter Geoff Price, trying to field a low snap, caught the ball with his knee on the ground, resulting in excellent field position for BC.
Ryan picked apart the Irish secondary on his way down the field, and Callender eventually plunged in from a yard out for a 13-0 edge with 1:32 to go in the half.
Clausen's first pass of the second half was tipped and then intercepted by Tyronne Pruitt, who returned it to the Irish 10. Three plays later, Ryan found Callender on a slant route for a touchdown and a 20-0 lead.
But Sharpley came on for the following possession and led the Irish downfield for a score. He found Parris for a 28-yard gain, and a penalty on BC linebacker Mark Herzlich for a hit to the head gave the Irish 15 more yards. Sharpley beat the blitz to find fullback Asaph Schwapp for a 15-yard gain to the Eagles 19, and then hit Parris again for a 19-yard touchdown over the middle.
BC took over and went to its screen pass game, but a pair of holding penalties forced a 3rd-and-8 at the BC 24. Ryan then overthrew his receiver and was picked off by Smith, who took it 25 yards down the left sideline for the score, making it a 20-14 ballgame.
However, a celebration penalty in the end zone was assessed to the Irish, and they were forced to kick off from the 15-yard line. BC started its drive on Notre Dame's side of the 50, and just five plays and fewer than two minutes later, Ryan found Kevin Challenger for a 13-yard touchdown in the corner of the end zone.
"Right after you throw a pick that goes for six you want to come right back out fighting," Ryan said. "At this point in my career I've thrown plenty of picks. You just have to block it out. As a quarterback you definitely have to have temporary amnesia and go out there and keep chucking it. That's what we did."
Late in the third, a block in the back on a punt and a roughing the passer penalty helped move the Irish inside the BC 30, but Price's 41-yard field goal hooked wide right on the first play of the fourth quarter.
After Sharpley converted a key 4th-and-5 on a completion to Parris that was aided by a 15-yard late-hit penalty, the Irish had the ball at the BC 22 trailing by 13 with a little more than six minutes remaining. Two plays later, Sharpley hit Carlson for a nine-yard gain to the 13, but the Irish needed another fourth-down conversion to keep the drive alive.
Initially, it appeared they got the first down - and a touchdown to boot - when Sharpley found Parris in the end zone, but the score was nullified by a holding penalty on Michael Turkovich, and the drive was halted when Sharpley tossed an incompletion under pressure on the following play.
Game Notes
BC's next game is against Virginia Tech, a Thursday night affair in Blacksburg October 25...Laws' blocked kick was the fifth of his career, and second this season...Smith's INT return for a TD was the first by a Notre Dame freshman since 1975...Boston College starting left guard Ryan Poles injured his Achilles tendon in the first quarter and did not return.
