Brohm and L'ville end Cincy's hopes for perfect season

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Brian Brohm completed 28 of 38 passes for 350 yards and three touchdowns as Louisville came back from a pair of seven- point deficits to hand Cincinnati its first loss, 28-24, at Nippert Stadium.

Harry Douglas caught seven passes for 118 yards, Scott Long had five receptions for 75 yards and Patrick Carter caught five for 59 yards, including a pair of touchdowns for the Cardinals (4-3 overall, 1-1 Big East), who ended what was temporarily the nation's longest winning streak.

Brock Bolen carried 12 times for 38 yards and also had four catches for 45 yards and a touchdown, while Anthony Allen amassed 27 yards on the ground and scored the go-ahead touchdown.

"Our guys stepped up and made play after play," said Louisville head coach Steve Kragthorpe. "We never got down. Our guys kept battling and made plays."

Cincinnati (6-1, 1-1) got another strong performance from Ben Mauk, who completed 26 of 45 pass attempts for 324 yards, throwing for three touchdowns and one late interception. Dominick Goodman had 11 catches for 141 yards and a touchdown, while redshirt freshman Marcus Barnett caught five passes - two for scores - for 83 yards.

Butler Benton rushed 10 times for 56 yards for the Bearcats, who, following LSU's loss Saturday afternoon, owned the nation's longest winning streak at nine games. But they will now head to Pittsburgh next Saturday looking to begin a fresh streak.

"For us this was a disappointing loss," said Cincinnati head coach Brian Kelly. "Our kids played as hard as they possibly could. Like it always does when you have two good football teams playing each other, it comes down to just a couple of plays to make the difference in a ballgame. I'm proud of how our kids played. They were prepared to play. We came up short tonight. Give Louisville credit. They got good pressure out of their front four. Ben (Mauk) had to move his feet a little too much tonight. You don't like to see your quarterback where he can't set. From my vantage point it looked like Louisville did a good job up front."

The Bearcats got on the board first as Mauk led the Bearcats on an 11-play, 71-yard march that culminated in a 24-yard hookup with Goodman.

But Louisville responded on its following possession, with Brohm leading the Cardinals 51 yards in just eight plays. He hit Douglas for a 19-yard completion down to the Cincinnati 9, and then found Bolen in the end zone two plays later for a five-yard touchdown to tie the game.

Mauk then went back to Goodman on the following drive, with the key play an 18-yard completion aided by a 15-yard personal foul that moved the Bearcats into Louisville territory. Another Cardinals penalty - defensive holding - brought the ball inside the 10, and Mauk found Barnett on 2nd-and-goal from the 5 for a 14-7 lead.

Both defenses stiffened in the second, and the teams traded punts until Louisville got a break. Cincy's Kevin Huber shanked a 32-yard punt that gave the Cardinals the ball at the UC 42-yard line. Brohm hit Carter over the middle to move inside the 20, and then found him again for a four-yard touchdown to complete an eight-play drive that tied the game with 15 seconds to go in the half.

After Louisville's Art Carmody missed a 44-yard field goal midway through the second quarter, Mauk led the Bearcats on an 11-play, 73-yard drive to regain the lead. Greg Moore rushed over the left side for 14 yards and a key first down into Lousville territory, and Mauk capped the drive with a beautifully thrown ball to Bennett on a screen-and-go route down the left sideline for a 17-yard touchdown.

But Brohm responded on the ensuing drive, firing deep down the middle of the field for Long, who made a full-extension diving catch at the UC 12-yard line for a 42-yard gain. Three plays later, Brohm eluded the rush, rolled left and threw across his body to Carter in the back of the end zone for an eight- yard touchdown to tie the game.

On its next possession, Cincinnati gambled with a quarterback sneak on 4th- and-1 from the Louisville 46. But Mauk was stopped short, and the Cardinals took over in great position to take their first lead.

Brohm went up top for Douglas on the first play from scrimmage, resulting in a 51-yard completion to the UC 3-yard line. One play later, Allen plunged in from three yards out to make it a 28-21 game with 10:37 left.

Cincy then drove from its own 20 all the way to inside the Louisville five- yard line, thanks to consecutive pass plays from Mauk to Barnett, for 23 and 34 yards, respectively. But a false start penalty on 3rd-and-goal from the two pushed the Bearcats back, and after Mauk's pass fell incomplete, they were forced to settle for a Jake Rogers field goal from 23 yards out.

After the Cardinals defense held strong, Brohm and the offense regained possession with 3:46 remaining, and drove 45 yards before being stopped at the goal line on a QB sneak with 36 seconds remaining for a turnover on downs.

But Cincy had no timeouts, needing to go 99 yards, and went only 15 yards before Mauk was picked off to kill the threat.

"Our defense stepped up and made big plays," said Kragthorpe. "The first quarter got off to a shaky start, but we were able to turn it around and get the turnover on the first drive. Then, the second through fourth quarters our guys made play after play. We got pressure on the quarterback and forced him to be a little uncomfortable. It was great."

Game Notes

Douglas leads the team with 11 plays of over 25 yards on the season...Louisville was without WR Mario Urrutia, who was a late scratch...The win earned the Cardinals the "Keg of Nails," which is awarded to the winner of this interstate rivalry each season.
