Red-shirt freshman quarterback Kevin Riley killed any chance of tying the game as he ran the ball over the middle near the 10-yard line and time expired before the Golden Bears could line up for a field goal attempt.
The Golden Bears, trailing 31-21, made it a one-possession game as Riley and Lavelle Hawkins hooked up on a 64-yard catch-and-run to make it a 31-28 contest with 2:31 to play.
After stopping the Beavers on the next possession, California got the ball back at its own six-yard line. On 4th-and-17, Riley hit Hawkins for 19 yards to move the chains. A 37-yard diving catch from Robert Jordan got the ball into field goal position and a pass interference call on third down gave the Golden Bears the ball at the 12-yard line.
With just 12 seconds left, Riley dropped back to pass, but saw nothing and opted to run and was stopped after reaching the 10 as the clock ran out before the field goal team could line up for an attempt.
"I thought about throwing out of bounds but that would have been a penalty as well because I thought I might have been over the line of scrimmage," said Riley. "It's just part of the game, I was in the middle of a play and I thought I could make one."
The loss was doubly unfortunate for the Golden Bears (5-1, 2-1 Pac-10), who most assuredly would have been No. 1 if they would have won due to LSU losing to Kentucky, 43-37, in three overtimes, earlier Saturday.
Sean Canfield went 18-for-33 for 186 yards for the Beavers (4-3, 2-2), who have won seven of the last nine games against the Golden Bears.
"I'm real proud of our team and our coaches," said Oregon State coach Mike Riley. "I think we had gone through some hard times, we had some opportunities early and didn't capitalize and they just kept working hard and playing. Now, we'll enjoy this victory, it's nice going into a bye and then we'll try to get better from here."
Kevin Riley, starting in place of Nate Longshore, who sprained his right ankle in Cal's last game against Oregon on September 29, finished the game 20-of-34 with 294 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while Hawkins had nine catches for 192 yards and two scores for California. Justin Forsett had 28 carries for 150 yards and a score.
"Kevin played a gutsy game," said California coach Jeff Tedford. "He did a very nice job keeping his composure against a very good defense. He did a fine job for his first time out. In the beginning he was nervous, but I thought he settled down. Oregon State has a very good defense. They lead the country in sacks. Kevin did a nice job making people miss him."
Trailing, 21-20, after California scored in the first minute of the fourth quarter, Oregon State grabbed the lead on its ensuing possession.
Gerard Lawson gave the team good field position with a 39-yard return on the kickoff. On 3rd-and-9 near midfield, Canfield hit Anthony Brown with a pass for 26 yards. Later on 4th-and-goal at the one-yard line, Bernard got the ball into the end zone and Canfield connected with Brown on the two-point conversion for a 28-21 cushion with 8:30 to play.
Jahvid Best fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Keith Pankey fell on it to give the Beavers the ball back. The drive stalled at the California 16 and a 33- yard by Alexis Serna made it a 31-21 contest with 6:13 left.
Late in the first quarter, Alan Darlin hit Forsett causing a fumble and he recovered the ball at the California 16. Six plays later, Andy Stewart got the ball into the end zone from a yard out to give the Beavers a 7-0 lead with 2:09 left in the first.
The Golden Bears, though, responded on their next possession. A seven-play, 77-yard drive that spanned the first and second quarters was capped off on a 10-yard touchdown catch by Hawkins from Riley. The big play of the drive occurred on 3rd-and-1 when Riley hit Hawkins for a 34-yard play.
Victor Butler came up with a big play for Oregon State as he picked off a Riley pass and returned it 30 yards to the California 17. The team had a 1st- and-goal, but had to settle for a 22-yard field goal from Serna for a 10-7 lead with 4:27 left in the first half.
However, the Golden Bears immediately marched down the field and grabbed the lead on a three-yard touchdown run from Riley with just 43 seconds left in the half to made it a 14-10 contest. On the previous play, Riley hit Robert Jordan for a 29-yard strike to set up the 1st-and-goal.
The Beavers, though, wisely used the clock and their timeouts on the last possession of the first half and got a 52-yard field goal from Serna with one tick left on the clock to make it a 14-13 game heading into the locker room.
Oregon State had the first possession of the second half and a 12-play, 76- yard drive that at almost six minutes of the clock was capped off on a one- yard touchdown run from Bernard for a 20-14 lead with 9:14 left in the third.
In a drive that started towards the end of the third quarter and carried over into the fourth, the Golden Bears regained the lead, 21-20, on a seven-yard touchdown run from Forsett with 14:25 to play.
Game Notes
Bernard also had eight catches for 53 yards...Jordan finished the game with five receptions for 68 yards...California holds a 33-27 edge in the series.
