With the game tied late in the fourth quarter and Vanderbilt driving, Cassen Jackson-Garrison coughed up the football and Georgia recovered on its own eight-yard line with just under three minutes left.
The Bulldogs then quickly marched down the field and after an 11-yard pass to Tripp Chandler and five-yard run by Knowshon Moreno put Georgia on the 19-yard line, Coutu booted the game-winning field goal to complete the comeback.
"You work so hard with these guys all year and you learn to love these guys and any time that you can do anything to accomplish team goals it is so gratifying," Chandler said. "I was glad I was able to help get us in position to win."
Moreno ended with a career-high 157 yards rushing for the Bulldogs (5-2, 3-2 SEC), who scored 13 unanswered points in the second half and have posted victories in four of their last five games.
Matthew Stafford completed 16-of-31 passes for 201 yards and a touchdown while Tony Wilson had four catches for 57 yards in the win.
Mackenzi Adams threw for 125 yards and a touchdown on just 7-of-10 passing for the Commodores (3-3, 1-3), who have lost two straight.
"It was a very disappointing loss for us tonight," Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson said. "We felt like we played a pretty good game, but when you play teams like Georgia, you have to make plays and do what you need to do to win and we didn't get it done. I'm proud of our effort."
Adams also ran for 46 yards in the loss while D.J. Moore had 48 yards on the ground on just two carries.
The Bulldogs went up 7-0 with 8:13 remaining in the opening quarter after Stafford connected with Sean Bailey for a 32-yard touchdown reception down the right sideline.
With 1:05 left in the first, Bryan Hahnfeldt hit a 21-yard field goal to get Vanderbilt on the board.
The Commodores went up 10-7 after a 15-yard touchdown run by Sean Walker with 9:09 left in the second quarter.
With 2:36 left in the first half, Adams threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Walker to give Vanderbilt a 17-7 lead heading into the locker room.
Early in the fourth quarter, Georgia pulled to within three points after Brannan Southerland scored from one-yard out to make it 17-14.
The Bulldogs managed to tie the game after Coutu drilled a 30-yarder with 6:12 remaining.
