Gamecocks win battle of the Carolinas

Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Chris Smelley completed 17-of-26 passes for 172 yards and three touchdowns, as the seventh-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks held off the North Carolina Tar Heels, 21-15, at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill.

Cory Boyd rushed for 95 yards on 20 carries for the Gamecocks (6-1), who were fresh off a 38-23 decision over previously unbeaten Kentucky. Both scoring a touchdown, Kenny McKinley caught five balls for 64 yards and Jared Cook had three receptions for 55 yards.

T.J. Yates completed 22-of-42 passes for 285 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for North Carolina (2-5), which won its season opener under first-year coach Butch Davis before losing four in a row, however managed to upset Miami last weekend 33-27. Johnny White rushed for 37 yards on six attempts, and Hakeem Nicks caught eight balls for 114 yards in defeat.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Heels started to rally in the fourth, trailing 21-3. Yates hooked up with Greg Little on an 18-yard touchdown pass seven seconds into the stanza, but the two-point conversion failed. After the North Carolina defense contained the Gamecocks down the stretch, Yates kept it himself on a three-yard touchdown run with 3:03 remaining for a 21-15 Heels deficit after another failed two-point conversion attempt.

"We got to where we were ahead 21-3 and our defense was playing well, so I'm calling that conservative run, run crap, but even when we tried to throw we couldn't hit anything either," South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said.

After Ryan Succop's 48-yard field goal attempt bounced off the right upright, the Tar Heels had an opportunity to score with the game's final possession. Yates completed three quick passes to move the Heels to the South Carolina 31- yard line, but then threw two straight passes incomplete as the clock ran out on them.

"We won somehow, we held on," Spurrier said. "North Carolina didn't play very well in the first half, obviously. They had a lot of stumble-bumble plays around that gave us a chance to get a good lead, but they pretty much kicked us in the second half. Touchdowns instead of field goals I guess proved to be the difference for us."

The first quarter belonged to South Carolina, which started building its lead just more than three minutes into the game, as Smelley found Dion Lecorn on a three-yard touchdown pass to finished a six-play drive. About five minutes later, Smelley hooked up with McKinley on a 30-yard touchdown pass for a 14-0 South Carolina lead heading into the second.

Connor Barth's 45-yard field goal culminated a 12-play drive that chewed up more than five minutes to get North Carolina on the board.

But, South Carolina regained control heading into the locker room, as Cook caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Smelley with just 15 ticks left on the clock. The Gamecocks held a 21-3 halftime lead.

"You hate to lose any game, particularly a game like this," UNC coach Butch Davis said. "The thing I told the players in the locker room, one of things we have gone through so many games, I'm extraordinarily proud of our team's effort."

Game Notes

Smelley's three first-half TD passes were a career high...The Cocks are 6-1 for the first time since 2001...Despite the loss, North Carolina holds a commanding 34-17-4 advantage in the all-time series with South Carolina.
