Rudy Carpenter completed 20-of-31 passes for 227 yards, two scores, and an interception for the Sun Devils (7-0, 4-0 Pac-10) who find themselves among the ever-shrinking number of unbeaten schools in FBS, as LSU, California, Cincinnati and Missouri all lost Saturday. Dmitri Nance added 92 yards on 13 carries, including a 57-yard TD run. Chris McGaha had five catches for 73 yards for ASU, which will take a week off before hosting Cal on Oct. 27.
Jake Locker completed 10-of-28 passes for 142 yards, with one touchdown and one interception, and ran for 48 yards on 12 carries with a score for the Huskies (2-4, 0-3). Louis Rankin gained 80 yards on 11 carries, and Marcel Reece had two catches for 45 yards and a score for Washington.
The Sun Devils broke the game open with 21 points in the third quarter. ASU's Dexter Davis slammed Locker on a third-and-11, forcing a fumble, and ASU took over at the Huskies 35-yard-line. Six plays later, Carpenter found Rudy Burgess for a 21-yard score, putting ASU on top 20-17 with 11:01 left.
A kick-catch interference penalty on a Washington punt gave the Sun Devils great field position midway through the quarter. Nance broke through for a 57-yard scoring run on the very next play, and ASU took a 27-17 lead with just under seven minutes left.
The Huskies moved deep into ASU territory on their next possession, but stalled at the 20, and Ryan Perkins missed a 34-yard field goal attempt wide right. Herring rushed for four yards on the next play, and followed that by bursting through the left side of the line and racing 76 yards for a score, giving ASU a 34-17 lead with 2:29 left in the third.
Perkins and Thomas Weber traded field goals in the fourth quarter, and Troy Nolan's 35-yard interception return for a score with 4:12 left capped the win for the Sun Devils.
Weber opened the scoring with his 33-yard field goal with 7:56 left in the first quarter. Washington answered swiftly, moving 75 yards on nine plays in 3:46, scoring on a 36-yard connection from Locker to Reece, giving the Huskies a 7-3 lead with 4:03 left in the quarter.
A methodical 11-play, 71-yard drive was finished off by a three-yard TD toss from Carpenter to Kyle Williams, putting the Sun Devils ahead 10-7 with 9:13 left in the quarter.
The Huskies settled for a 24-yard Perkins field goal with 4:31 left in the first half, and Darin Harris picked off Carpenter on the first play of the ensuing drive, setting Washington up at the ASU 32. Locker didn't waste any time taking advantage of the field position, breaking through for a 32-yard TD run right up the gut to give Washington a 17-10 lead with 4:11 left.
Weber banged in a 24-yard field goal as time expired in the half to cut the Huskies lead to 17-13 at the break.
