According to the newspaper, Zook's salary would go to $1.305 million next season and would increase by another $200,000 per year if Illinois goes to a bowl game under his leadership, bringing the total to $1.505 million.
After finishing 4-19 his first two seasons, the Illini are 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten heading into Saturday's showdown against No. 24 Michigan.
One of the biggest reasons for Illinois' sudden success is Zook's ability to recruit. The 52-year old Zook has brought in two strong recruiting classes over the past two years.
Zook, who was hired to replace Ron Turner on Dec. 7, 2004, previously spent three seasons at Florida where he went 23-14, reaching three bowl games. He is credited with recruiting 22 of the 24 starters who helped the Gators win the Bowl Championship Series title last season under Urban Meyer.
