Since losing to Appalachian State and Oregon in the first two games of the season, Michigan has rallied for five consecutive wins. Last weekend, the Wolverines improved to 3-0 in league play with a 48-21 romp over a strong Purdue squad. There are many tests that lie ahead for Michigan, but the team does control its own destiny in regard to a trip to the Rose Bowl.
As for Illinois, it is coming off a 10-6 loss to Iowa on the road. That setback snapped a five-game winning streak for the Illini, who failed in their attempt to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2001 and were knocked out of the national rankings.
Michigan owns a commanding 65-21-2 series lead over Illinois, and the team's haven't met since 2004.
Entering this season, Michigan was hyped as one of the favorites to win the national championship, largely because of the three-headed offensive monster of Chad Henne, Mike Hart and Mario Manningham. Those three players put forth big efforts in the romp over Purdue last weekend. Hart, the team's tailback, racked up 102 rushing yards and two touchdowns before leaving the game with an ankle injury. His status for this weekend's tilt is still questionable. Henne played extremely well under center, completing 21-of-28 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. As for Manningham, an NFL-caliber wideout, he made eight catches for 147 yards and two scores. Michigan has achieved strong offensive balance through seven games, as the club is rushing for 201.3 ypg while passing for 206.7 ypg. Hart has rushed for 1,078 yards and 12 touchdowns while gaining 5.4 ypc, and the second-leading rusher on the roster has just 181 yards. With that in mind, Hart's health will be key to the outcome of this weekend's clash. Henne has completed 61.7 percent of his passes for 1,057 yards and eight touchdowns with four interceptions, and Manningham has made 37 grabs for 549 yards and four scores.
Give the Michigan defense a ton of credit for its play against Purdue last weekend. Sure, the Boilermakers did score three touchdowns, but two came in the final 47 seconds of the contest, long after the outcome had been decided. The run defense was tremendous, as Purdue was only able to gain 39 rushing yards on 25 attempts. The pass defense was stellar as well, posting a pair of interceptions while limiting the Boilermakers to 8.7 yards per completion. Opponents are scoring 20.1 ppg against Michigan, which has played strong defense since back-to-back shaky performances to start the season. The club has been solid against both the run and the pass, and there has been a wealth of big plays made with 25 sacks and 23 takeaways. Shawn Crable leads Michigan with 18 TFLs, including 5.5 sacks.
Illinois has put up strong offensive numbers this season, so it was surprising to see the Illini completely shut down offensively by Iowa last weekend. Rashard Mendenhall has proven to be one of the nation's premier tailbacks thus far, but he was limited to 67 yards on a modest total of 15 carries. Isiah "Juice" Williams, the team's starting quarterback, finished 9-of-15 for 98 yards, but he was pulled from the game after a fourth quarter fumble. Eddie McGee was inserted under center, and while he put the Illini in position to win in the final minutes, an interception at the goal line sealed the defeat. Illinois is averaging 26.7 ppg this season and 394.6 total ypg. Mendenhall has been tremendous, as he has rushed for 839 yards and 10 touchdowns while averaging 6.5 ypc. He has also caught 21 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns, and Illinois' best chance to win this weekend will be if Mendenhall touches to ball 30 times. Williams figures to be back under center, but McGee will be ready if needed.
Although Illinois lost last weekend, it is hard to blame the defense. Limiting a league opponent to 10 points on the road is a task rarely accomplished, so the Illini defenders have reason to be proud. The lone touchdown that Iowa scored came on a drive that spanned a mere 46 yards, and while the Hawkeyes finished with a decent total of 323 yards, Illinois seemed to tighten whenever it mattered most. Opponents are averaging 18.6 ppg against the Illini, who are yielding 361.9 total ypg. The run defense has been strong, limiting foes to 106.4 ypg and 3.0 ypc on the ground. Unfortunately, the pass defense has struggled a bit, surrendering many big plays and a high total of yardage. Of the eight interceptions that the Illini has managed, three have been recorded by Vontae Davis.
