South Carolina will attempt to move to 7-1, which would match their best start since the 1988 campaign. Also, a win this weekend would enable the Gamecocks to improve to 4-1 in the league standings, keeping them atop the SEC East and in control of their own destiny for a trip to the SEC Championship game. Steve Spurrier is a perfect 14-0 lifetime as a head coach against Vanderbilt, an obvious reason for optimism. The Gamecocks are currently riding a three-game win streak that includes last weekend's 21-15 non-conference triumph over North Carolina.
As for Vanderbilt, it has dropped back-to-back decisions since a promising 3-1 start to the campaign. Last weekend, the Commodores suffered a heart-breaking 20-17 setback to Georgia, dropping the squad to 1-3 against SEC competition.
South Carolina owns a 14-2 series lead over Vanderbilt, including seven straight wins over the Commodores.
Sean Walker scored a pair of touchdowns for Vanderbilt in last weekend's tussle with Georgia. First, Walker reached the end zone on a 15-yard run that capped a seven-play, 80-yard drive. Then, less than seven minutes later, Walker caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Mackenzi Adams. The Commodores scored all 17 of their points during a span of less than 14 minutes. The fact that Vandy was shutout in the second half of the contest paved the way for Georgia's comeback victory. Earl Bennett, the outstanding receiver for the Commodores, was limited to three catches for 31 yards. He suffers from poor quarterback play and constant double and triple coverage. Vanderbilt is scoring 22.7 ppg and 322.2 ppg, and points have been hard to come by lately. Bennett has made 44 catches for 530 yards and four touchdowns, but aside from a couple of big games, he has been fairly quiet. The ground attack has been rather weak and the quarterback play has been ugly at times.
Vanderbilt allowed two touchdowns, two field goals and 368 total yards to Georgia last weekend. The Commodores permitted 4.8 yards per rushing attempt and 12.6 yards per pass completion, both of which are rather high figures. Still, they managed to limit Georgia to 20 points, a valiant effort against a solid squad. Vanderbilt owns its respectable 3-3 record in large part because of a defense that puts forth maximum effort every time out. The Commodores are surrendering 20.0 ppg and 314.7 total ypg, respectable numbers by most standards. They have intercepted 11 passes while yielding only five passing touchdowns. On a down note, they have recovered just one fumble in six outings and have posted a lackluster total of 12 sacks.
Chris Smelley is a redshirt freshman quarterback who has taken over the reigns of Steve Spurrier's offense at South Carolina, and he has proven to be more than capable of handling the responsibilities that go along with the position. Smelley threw three touchdown passes against North Carolina last week to three different receivers, leading his Gamecocks to a narrow victory. The rookie finished with 172 passing yards and was intercepted once. Cory Boyd rushed for 95 yards in that game, and Kenny McKinley finished with five catches for 64 yards and a touchdown. South Carolina is scoring 27.9 ppg to go along with 348.9 total ypg. Boyd leads the squad in rushing with 482 yards and four touchdowns, while McKinley is the top receiver with 37 catches for 446 yards and six touchdowns. As for Smelley, he has completed 56.4 percent of his passes for 982 yards and nine touchdowns with four interceptions.
South Carolina surrendered 398 total yards to North Carolina last week, including 285 passing yards, but the Gamecocks limited their opponent to 15 points. Both touchdowns scored by the Tar Heels came in the fourth quarter, as Spurrier's defense softened a bit late in the contest. Fortunately, South Carolina was able to hold on for the win, and while it wasn't pretty, that has become a trait of the team. The Gamecocks are surrendering just 16.6 ppg this season, as strong defense has been key to the 6-1 start. This defense is certainly opportunistic, a statement that is backed up by the fact that Eric Norwood scored two touchdowns to lead to the thrilling victory over Kentucky two weeks ago. Norwood has 10 TFLs this season, including five sacks. South Carolina has played much better against the pass than the run, and it is facing a Vandy team that doesn't do either particularly well.
