Late score from Stephens-Howling leads Pitt past Bearcats

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - LaRod Stephens-Howling bowled into the end zone from six yards out to give Pittsburgh the lead for the first time during the fourth, as Pittsburgh upended No. 23 Cincinnati, 24-17, at Heinz Field.

"We knew we had a lot on our shoulders to get this W," Stephens-Howling said. "So we can get out of the hole, one, and then also make a statement that we haven't given up on our season. That lets people know we're still coming out every week to play."

The Panthers (3-4, 1-1 Big East) were led by the two-headed monster of LeSean McCoy and Stephens-Howling, with both reaching the 100-yard plateau. McCoy carried the heavy load with 25 carries for 137 yards and Stephens-Howling sliced his way through the defense for 100 yards and the game-winning score on 13 attempts. The win snapped a four-game losing streak.

Pat Bostick was an efficient 18-of-29 for 167 yards with one touchdown and one interception for the Panthers, who improved to 7-0 all-time versus Cincinnati.

The win came with head coach Dave Wannstedt looking on from the press box while still recovering from surgery for a torn ACL earlier in the week.

Ben Mauk was the dual threat for the Bearcats (6-2, 1-2), throwing for 237 yards and rushing for 94 more with one touchdown in defeat.

"What you saw out there today was a poorly coached football team and that stops and starts with me," Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly said. "We were poorly prepared and we didn't execute in any facet of our game. There were too many turnovers, too many penalties and you're going to lose to a team like Pitt when that happens. I hold myself accountable for the game today."

The Bearcats struck first with a seven-play, 82-yard march that led to Mauk's one-yard TD plunge. The big play of the march was another Mauk burst -- a 55- yard sprint to the Panthers 27-yard line.

Pittsburgh then rolled the dice on its next offensive series without much success. Bostick's sneak attempt on 4th-and-1 from the Panthers 28-yard line was stuffed, and Jacob Rogers converted the miscue into a 36-yard field goal and a 10-0 edge.

The Panthers answered back with a solid nine-play, 60-yard march that led to three points. Stephens-Howling galloped for 14 yards on the initial play and Bostick later found Oderick Turner for 18 yards to the Cincinnati 42-yard line. Conor Lee capped the march with 41-yard field goal with 3:05 remaining in the first stanza.

McCoy carried the load on the next Pitt possession, slipping his way for 21 yards and 11 yards total on three more carries before Bostick stuck a pass right into the chest of Darrell Strong in the middle of the end zone for a four-yard score and a 10-10 game with 7:46 remaining in the half.

The Bearcats took the blow and struck back with a 10-play, 79-yard TD drive for the lead before halftime. Mauk found Butler Benton for 29 yards then Benton scampered for 14 more into Pitt territory. Mauk and Benton handled the next four plays before the signal-caller threw a dart to Marcus Barnett, moving the football to the Panthers two-yard line. Doug Jones plowed to paydirt from three yards away with 3:18 to go before halftime.

Pitt drew first blood in the third quarter with a 10-play, 74-yard march and another field goal. McCoy carried for six and four yards, then following a personal foul penalty, the back broke off a 23-yard burst. Later, Bostick found T.J. Porter for 34 yards to the Bearcats nine-yard line. Lee split the uprights from 25 yards out for a 17-13 game.

The Panthers defense made a big play early in the fourth stanza, leading to three more points on the scoreboard. Tommie Duhart stripped the football on a wide receiver screen and Eric Thatcher recovered at the Cincinnati 22-yard line. Lee's 37-yarder was true with 11:10 remaining, cutting the deficit to 17-16.

Game Notes

The Panthers pounded Cincinnati, 33-15, at Nippert Stadium last season...Pittsburgh improved to 3-2 at home this season...The Panthers much- maligned defense played much better after allowing 126 points over the last three games...Pittsburgh finished with 427 total yards to 358 for the Bearcats.
