McCoy, No. 19 Longhorns down Baylor

Waco, TX (Sports Network) - Colt McCoy completed 25-of-34 passes for 293 yards with a touchdown as 19th-ranked Texas defeated Baylor 31-10 in a Big 12 matchup at Floyd Casey Stadium.

Vondrell McGee ran for 57 yards and a score, while Jamaal Charles added 49 yards on the ground. Nate Jones caught a team-high six passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. Jermichael Finley added 60 yards on five receptions.

Texas (6-2, 2-2 Big 12), which racked up 473 yards of total offense, and has won the last 10 meetings between the schools since a 23-21 Baylor victory November 1, 1997, in Waco.

Baylor quarterback Michael Machen threw for 231 yards on 25-of-44 passing with a touchdown and three costly interceptions. Justin Akers had 77 yards on nine receptions and David Gettis caught four passes for 73 yards.

The Bears (3-5, 0-4) dropped their fourth straight contest, and now have lost eight straight conference games since their 36-35 comeback victory over Kansas on October 22, 2006.

In the second quarter, with Texas leading 3-0 and nearing the goal line, McCoy overthrew a wide-open Peter Ullman on 3rd-and-goal from the Bears' one and coach Mack Brown opted to go for it on fourth down. McCoy pitched the ball to McGee, but he couldn't handle it and Brandon Stiggers scooped the ball up and returned it 60 yards to the Longhorns' 32. McCoy was assessed a 15-yard penalty at the end of the play for grabbing the facemask, giving the Bears possession at the 17.

One play later, Machen connected with Thomas White for a 17-yard touchdown with 7:12 remaining in the half.

Texas quickly responded as McCoy orchestrated a 5-play, 66-yard drive, culminating with a 23-yard strike to Jones in the back of the end zone to give the Longhorns a 10-7 lead.

With 3:01 remaining in the third quarter, Chris Ogbonnaya scampered into the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown to cap off a 15-play, 91-yard drive. The momentum-changing play of the drive was a fake punt that Texas converted to maintain possession.

In the fourth, Baylor would cut the margin to 17-10 on a 35-yard field goal by Caleb Allen, but McGee's 4-yard touchdown run coupled with Marcus Griffin's 91-yard interception return put the game out of reach for the Longhorns.

"With 12 minutes in the game and it's 17-10 we thought we had a shot at them and we just didn't come up with a play," said Baylor coach Guy Morriss. "We just didn't make enough plays offensively to get over the hump."

Texas' Ryan Bailey amounted for all the scoring in the first quarter, drilling a 46-yard field goal with 3:31 remaining.
