Patrick Cowan completed 18-of-27 passes for 161 yards and one touchdown, finding his brother Joe seven times for 39 yards and Brandon Breazell four times for 68 yards. Breazell also threw a touchdown pass and rushed for 21 yards as the Bruins (5-2, 4-0 Pac-10) came from behind three separate times to remain unbeaten in conference play and atop the standings.
Kahlil Bell rushed 22 times for 142 yards for UCLA, which forced four turnovers, including two interceptions by Verner. Following a week off, the Bruins recovered from an embarrassing 20-6 home defeat at the hands of one-win Notre Dame on Oct. 6.
"I'm going to feel good today, but tomorrow it's going to be business as usual," UCLA head coach Karl Dorrell said of the win. "It's tough to play up there in Pullman (against next week's opponent, Washington State). When you have a victory like this, you enjoy it for a few hours and then it's time to go on to the next one."
California's Nate Longshore, playing with an ankle injury that sidelined him during a loss to Oregon State last Saturday, was 22-for-34 passing for 232 yards and three touchdowns, but was also picked off three times, most damagingly by Verner on the potential go-ahead scoring drive.
DeSean Jackson continued to put up Heisman Trophy-caliber numbers, catching nine passes for 136 yards and a pair of scores, and Justin Forsett rushed 25 times for 76 yards, but the Golden Bears were unable to snap a dubious streak in Pasadena, and more importantly, likely cost themselves any remaining shot at a Pac-10 or national championship. With the loss, Cal (5-2, 2-2) has still not won at the Rose Bowl since 1999, a span of four meetings.
"We have stumbled two weeks in a row now," Bears coach Jeff Tedford said. "We just have to regroup. We are not going to just pack it in. There is so much parity in this conference. Anything can happen on any given week. I think the conference is better than it's ever been. They just played a lot better than we did. They were more physical and deserved to win the football game."
Midway through the third, trailing 20-14, Cal took over at its own 33 and went 67 yards in 10 plays for the go-ahead score. Longshore finished the drive with a two-yard touchdown pass on a jump ball to Jackson in the corner of the end zone for a 21-20 edge.
A defensive stand by the Bruins and a subsequent 32-yard punt by Cal's Andrew Larson gave UCLA the ball just shy of midfield with under nine minutes to go. Cowan then engineered a 10-play, 42-yard drive that ended with a 27-yard Kai Forbath field goal for a 23-21 lead.
But Cal's Matt Slater took the ensuing kick 49 yards to position the Bears deep in UCLA territory with just over three minutes left for a potential game- winning score. Likely needing just a couple first downs to set up a field goal attempt, Longshore looked for Jackson, but Verner jumped his out route for the pick and raced untouched to the house for the backbreaking score.
With only a minute and change remaining, the Bears were forced to try and score quickly, and it resulted in another quick interception, Longshore's third of the day, effectively putting the game away.
Cal went three-and-out on its opening possession of the game, but then forced a UCLA punt and mounted a 12-play, 79-yard drive that spanned over five minutes. Longshore completed all seven of his pass attempts on the drive, finishing it off with a 21-yard strike to Craig Stevens with 6:43 remaining in the quarter to give the Bears a 7-0 lead.
The Bruins responded with a 15-play march of their own that extended into the second quarter, culminating in a 32-yard field goal from Forbath.
Longshore moved the Bears offense near midfield on its next possession, but Larson shanked an 18-yard punt to set the Bruins up with good field position. Bell ripped off a 64-yard run to the Cal 2 on the first snap of the drive to set up Cowan's touchdown pass to Logan Paulsen for a 10-7 UCLA lead.
The Bears answered with a pair of big plays of their own to regain the lead. Lavelle Hawkins returned the UCLA kick 31 yards to the Cal 48, and four plays later Longshore found Jackson five yards behind the secondary down the middle of the field for a seemingly easy 39-yard touchdown.
Cowan found Breazell for a 38-yard gain on UCLA's next play from scrimmage, and Forbath capped the 10-play drive with a 28-yard field goal to cut the Cal lead to 14-13.
The defenses traded forced fumbles and Cal moved into field goal position just before the half, but Jordan Kay missed from 44 yards and it remained a one- point game heading into the locker rooms.
UCLA reclaimed the lead on its initial drive of the second half thanks to a wide receiver-reverse pass that had been set up earlier in the game. With the ball at the Cal 30, Breazell lined up split wide to the left and came around to the backfield for a handoff from Cowan - just as he had on a running play in the first quarter - but then planted and threw deep down the middle to Johnson for a 29-yard touchdown pass.
Game Notes
Verner has now returned three interceptions for touchdowns on the season...UCLA holds a half-game lead over Arizona State (3-0) in the conference standings; the Sun Devils were idle Saturday...Cal was held to just 67 net yards rushing; entering the game, they were averaging 196.2 yards per game on the ground, while the Bruins had limited opponents to 81.7 yards rushing per contest.
