Stewart rushes for 251 yards as Oregon crushes Washington

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Jonathan Stewart rushed for a career-high 251 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the seventh-ranked Oregon Ducks used their running game to decimate Washington, 55-34, at Husky Stadium.

Stewart, whose 32 carries were seven more than his previous high, became the first Oregon back to rush for 200 yards since Ontario Smith set the school record with 285 yards against Washington State in 2001.

"Calling this a trap game is a disservice to Washington," said Oregon coach Mike Bellotti, whose team plays at home against nationally-ranked Southern California next Saturday. "They're a good football team, they work very hard.. They did some things, we just wore them down with our offense. That's a credit to our guys up front, they did a great job."

Andre Crenshaw added 113 yards on the ground and chipped in with pair of second-half scoring runs, while Dennis Dixon fell a yard shy of the century mark on 12 carries for Oregon (6-1, 3-1 Pac 10), which finished with a school-record 465 rushing yards and won its fourth straight game over the Huskies for the first time since 1928-31.

Dixon completed 19-of-30 passes for 196 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

Redshirt freshman Jake Locker completed 12-of-31 passes for 257 yards and four scores, but Washington (2-5, 0-4) lost its fifth straight game. Locker also paced the ground game, rushing 13 times for 78 yards, while Anthony Russo had five receptions for 127 yards and a TD.

"I think we've got some issues," Washington coach Tyrone Willingham said. "Obviously, there were a lot of things that we didn't do and places that we didn't get to that we wanted to be. I don't think it's as simple as just saying `we missed a tackle and we played a good back.' I think there are things that we have to work on and continue to improve at to get ourselves in the right position."

Oregon took the opening kickoff and marched 61 yards on nine plays to take a 7-0 lead. The drive ended when Dixon faked the handoff on 2nd-and-2, darted around the right end and lobbed the ball to a wide open Garren Strong in the end zone.

Washington went three-and-out on its first possession, and the Ducks again found their way to the end zone, as Stewart's two-yard plunge made it a 14-0 game.

The Huskies then needed just one play to get on the scoreboard, as Locker hooked up with Russo over the middle for an 83-yard touchdown at 4:42.

The Ducks responded with a 20-yard field goal by Matt Evensen to hold a 17-7 edge heading to the second quarter.

In a span of seven plays, Washington made it a 17-14 game midway through the stanza when Locker hooked up with Marcel Reece on a 26-yard TD toss. Oregon had the answer, however, as Stewart rushed for a 12-yard score to give the Ducks a 10-point cushion with 6:06 remaining.

Washington tacked on a 20-yard field goal by Ryan Perkins with 41 ticks left in the half to cut it to 24-17.

The Huskies knotted things up, 24-24, on a 43-yard scoring strike from Locker to Louis Rankin less than three minutes into the third quarter, but Oregon countered by intercepting Locker at midfield and capping a 15-play drive with 17-yard run by Crenshaw with 3:38 remaining in the stanza.

Reece hauled in his second touchdown pass of the night as Washington once again evened the score at 1:12, but Oregon went back on top again with 12:54 remaining in the game when Crenshaw ran it in from five yards out.

Both teams traded field goals after that, as Evensen connected on a 47-yarder for Oregon, while Perkins made good on a 42-yard attempt for Washington with just under six minutes to play.

A 13-yard TD run by Dixon sealed the win for the Ducks with 4:52 left in the game, while a 4-yard run by Remene Alston accounted for the final score with 2:20 remaining.
