South Florida dropped a 30-27 decision at Rutgers this past Thursday and became the third straight No. 2 team to lose. The setback dropped the Bulls nine spots to 11th in this week's poll.
Southern California and California were the previous two teams ranked at No. 2 to lose.
Ohio State (8-0), which held off a late Michigan State charge to earn a 24-17 victory this past Saturday, received 57 first-place votes and a total of 1,612 points from a nationwide media panel to keep the top spot for a second straight week.
Boston College (7-0), idle this past week, benefited from South Florida's demise and moved up a spot to No. 2. The Eagles earned a pair of first-place votes and 1,494 points to edge LSU (7-1), which rallied for a dramatic 30-24 win over Auburn on Saturday. The Tigers received five first-place votes and 1,479 points to move up two spots from fifth.
Oklahoma (7-1), after a less-than-stellar 17-7 win over Iowa State, remained fourth and is followed by Oregon, West Virginia, Arizona State, Virginia Tech, Florida and Southern California.
Arizona State (7-0), idle this past Saturday, registered one first-place vote for the second straight week and moved up five spots. Florida and Southern California are tied for ninth.
After South Florida at No. 11, undefeated Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, South Carolina, Hawaii, Texas, California, Michigan and Georgia round out the remainder of the second 10.
Kentucky tumbled six spots from eighth after a 45-37 home loss to Florida, while South Carolina matched South Florida for the biggest drop within the poll. The Gamecocks also fell nine spots from sixth to 15th after a stunning 17-6 home loss to Vanderbilt. California also dropped eight spots from 10th after a second consecutive loss, a 30-21 defeat at the hands of UCLA.
Virginia, Alabama, Auburn, Penn State and Rutgers round out this week's poll.
Four of the bottom five are newcomers.
Virginia makes its 2007 debut in the rankings after an 18-17 last-second victory over Maryland gave the Cavaliers their seventh straight win following a season-opening loss at Wyoming.
Alabama is back for the second time this season. The Crimson Tide had a two- week run in late September following a 3-0 start, but lost twice as a ranked team and has now won three straight, including this past Saturday's 41-17 rout of Tennessee.
Penn State began the season as the 17th-ranked team and got as high as No. 10 before losses to Michigan and Illinois. The Nittany Lions have won three in a row to move back in.
Rutgers also started the season in the poll and reached No. 10 before back-to- back losses against Maryland and Cincinnati. The Scarlet Knights have won two in a row, culminating in the big victory over South Florida.
Penn State and Rutgers will have immediate tests in their respective returns to ranked action. The Nittany Lions will have the biggest with a visit from No. 1 Ohio State on Saturday night, while the Scarlet Knights will host West Virginia in a huge Big East matchup.
The big weekend of ranked teams facing each other gets an early start on Thursday when Virginia Tech welcomes Boston College, as the Eagles try to end the streak of losses by the second-ranked team.
Two games from the Pac-10 on Saturday involve a pair of ranked teams, as California tries to get back on the winning track against unbeaten Arizona State in Tempe and Oregon takes on Southern California in Eugene.
The SEC has just one game with a pair of ranked teams this week, as Georgia and Florida meet in Jacksonville at the Cocktail Party.
Four teams dropped out of this week's poll, as Texas Tech, Tennessee, Kansas State and Cincinnati all lost this past Saturday.
