South Carolina carried a three-game winning streak into last weekend's home clash against Vanderbilt and was clearly favored in that tilt. Unfortunately, a complete lack of offensive production led to a 17-6 loss to the Commodores.
As for Tennessee, it carried a three-game winning streak into last weekend's clash with Alabama, but the result of that game was a lopsided 41-17 defeat. The 17 points marked the lowest offensive output of the season for the Vols, who are set to play four straight games in Knoxville.
Tennessee holds a commanding 20-3-2 series lead over South Carolina, and the Vols recorded a 31-24 victory in last season's meeting.
South Carolina seemed to do everything wrong on offense against Vanderbilt last weekend. The Gamecocks finished with 26 rushing yards and turned the ball over four times, including three interceptions. Also, they were 1-of-12 on third down conversion attempts and yielded seven sacks. Chris Smelley and Blake Mitchell both saw action under center for South Carolina, and neither quarterback was particularly impressive. Overall this season, the Gamecocks are scoring 25.1 ppg and gaining 340.5 total ypg. The ground attack could certainly stand some improvement, as they are only managing 3.5 yards per carry. Coach Steve Spurrier has shown in the past that he is willing to change quarterbacks frequently if things aren't going well. Smelley has thrown nine touchdowns against six interceptions, while Mitchell has tossed three scores against five picks. The best of the wideouts is Kenny McKinley, as he has recorded 41 catches for 525 yards and six touchdowns.
The defensive unit of South Carolina did everything it could to keep the squad in the game. Vanderbilt kicked a field goal to cap off a nine-yard drive and scored touchdowns on drives of 24 and 43 yards. Clearly, the turnovers committed by the Gamecock offense put the defense in tough situations, and the resulted were positive considering what could have been. Opponents are scoring 16.6 ppg against South Carolina, which is yielding 177.8 ypg on the ground and 145.9 ypg through the air. Several players have contributed to the solid defensive play of the squad. Emanuel Cook leads the Gamecocks with 57 total tackles, and Eric Norwood has posted 13 TFLs, including five sacks. It was Norwood who scored a pair of touchdowns in the big victory over Kentucky a few weeks ago.
Tennessee is scoring 31.9 ppg this season to go along with 416.4 total ypg. The offense is led by the talented Erik Ainge, widely considered one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC. Ainge has completed 66 percent of his passes for 1,797 yards and 13 touchdowns with only four interceptions. Lucas Taylor is tops among the receivers with 43 catches for 633 yards and three touchdowns. Arian Foster spearheads the ground attack with 625 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, and he is averaging 5.7 ypc. Ainge threw a touchdown pass and Foster scored on a short run against Alabama last weekend, but there simply wasn't much to cheer about for fans of the Vols. A pair of interceptions clearly hurt Tennessee, which was forced to abandon the run because of a large deficit.
Fans of the Tennessee program are undoubtedly disappointed by the play of the team's defense thus far. The Vols are surrendering 32.3 ppg and 406.7 total ypg, numbers that simply need to improve. Sure, Tennessee needs only one more win to qualify for a bowl game, but supporters expect more than simply bowl eligibility. The defense is simply not up to par for an SEC club, as the Vols are yielding 4.5 rushing yards per carry and 12.6 yards per pass completion. Looking at the roster, there is a glaring lack of an impact defender, someone who can be counted on to make a big play when needed. Tennessee gave up 510 total yards to Alabama last week and failed to record a single takeaway, arguably the defense's worst effort of the season.
