Pivotal SEC bout pits 'Dawgs against Gators

Jacksonville, FL (Sports Network) - One of college football's most bitter rivalries will add another chapter this weekend as the 20th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs and the ninth-ranked Florida Gators battle in SEC action.

The game will be played in Jacksonville, an annual tradition for this battle between the Gators and Bulldogs. Georgia has had two weeks to prepare for this showdown, as the last outing for the squad was a 20-17 victory over Vanderbilt on October 13th. The Bulldogs are 5-2 overall, including 3-2 in league play.

After winning its first four games this season, Florida suffered back-to-back losses to Auburn and LSU by seven combined points. Fortunately, the Gators were able to get back on track last weekend with a 45-37 decision over an outstanding Kentucky squad. The remaining schedule is favorable for the Gators, who still have their sights set on the SEC title.

Georgia holds a 46-37-2 advantage in the all-time series with Florida, but the Gators recorded a 21-14 victory in last season's clash. Florida has won 15 of the last 17 meetings.

Georgia has been a mediocre offensive team for much of this season, as the squad often finds itself in close games and must do just enough to get by. The Bulldogs are averaging 28.1 ppg and 362.7 total ypg, numbers that aren't going to scare the Gators. The ground attack for Georgia is averaging 4.4 ypc, a solid number. Knowshon Moreno leads the club with 619 rushing yards, while Thomas Brown has posted 413 yards and six touchdowns. With Brown out with a collarbone injury, Moreno is counted on more heavily. The quarterback is young Matthew Stafford, who seems to improve a bit with each game. Stafford has completed 55.3 percent of his passes for 1,364 yards and 10 touchdowns with four interceptions, numbers that would be even better if there was a top-notch receiver on the roster. Brandon Coutu kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired to lift Georgia to the win over Vanderbilt last time out. Stafford threw a 32-yard touchdown pass in that game, and Brennan Southerland had a one- yard touchdown run for the Dawgs.

Opponents are scoring 19.7 ppg against Georgia, which is allowing 319.6 total ypg. The Bulldogs have surrendered 15 touchdowns to opposing offenses, including 11 rushing scores. Still, they are limiting ball carriers to 3.8 ypc, so it isn't as if they have struggled to stop the run. Dannell Ellerbe has been the most active player on defense for Georgia, as his 53 total tackles are 17 more than his closest teammate. There is room for improvement in the sack category, as the Bulldogs have posted just 12 thus far. Give the Georgia defense credit for its effort against Vanderbilt last time out, as the Commodores managed only 17 points. Star receiver Earl Bennett was held to 31 yards on three catches, the key to success for Georgia.

In his first season as the starting quarterback of the Florida Gators, sophomore Tim Tebow is considered a serious Heisman Trophy candidate. He certainly strengthened his resume' against Kentucky last weekend, completing 18-of-26 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. All four scores went to different receivers, as Tebow is not short on weapons. A major threat as a runner as well, the Florida signal caller rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. The Gators are racking up 40.4 ppg and 446.3 total ypg this season. Tebow leads the club in rushing with 578 yards and 10 touchdowns. As a passer, he has completed 66.1 percent of his throws for 1,711 yards and 17 scores with only three interceptions. With a 53 percent success rate on third down conversion attempts, the Gators have done an outstanding job of moving the chains and sustaining drives.

Facing one of the nation's premier offensive units led by a star quarterback, the Florida defense figured to struggle a bit against Kentucky last weekend. That was certainly the case, as the Wildcats moved the ball up and down the field with great success. Kentucky finished with 29 first downs and 512 yards en route to 37 points, as Florida can not be proud of its defensive effort. While the Gators did a tremendous job against the run, they permitted 415 passing yards on 70 percent completions. The Gators have been a solid defensive team this season despite the poor showing against Kentucky. They are permitting 23.3 ppg and 351.0 total ypg, numbers that were obviously more impressive before last week.
