Not much has gone right for Ole Miss, as it has lost back-to-back games to fall to 2-6 overall, including 0-5 in league play. The Rebels suffered their most lopsided loss of the season last weekend, as they were crushed by Arkansas, 44-8, in front of a disappointed home crowd. The lone wins for the program have come over Memphis and Louisiana Tech, not exactly an impressive resume'.
Auburn is coming off a 30-24 loss to LSU in a game that featured one of the most dramatic finishes in recent memory. That defeat halted a four-game winning streak for the Tigers, who are 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Auburn holds a commanding 23-8 series lead over Ole Miss, including a 10-2 record at home against the Tigers.
Ole Miss has been a mediocre team on offense this season, as the squad is scoring just 20.2 ppg while gaining 349.1 total ypg. The Rebels have scored 17 offensive touchdowns thus far, 14 of which have come through the air. Unfortunately, they have also thrown 14 interceptions to go along with five lost fumbles and 22 sacks allowed. Seth Adams has taken the majority of snaps for the club, and he has completed 57.1 percent of his passes for 1,720 yards with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Shay Hodge is a possession receiver who has made 31 grabs for 360 yards and three touchdowns. Mike Wallace is the big-play guy on the outside, as he has posted 30 catches for 654 yards and six touchdowns. As for the ground attack, BenJarvus Green-Ellis has rushed for 785 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 4.9 ypc. The lone touchdown against Arkansas last weekend came on a 37-yard touchdown pass from backup Brent Shaeffer to Wallace. Adams threw four interceptions in that game, and it remains to be seen how coach Ed Orgeron uses his quarterbacks this weekend.
Opponents are scoring 29.5 ppg against Ole Miss, which is allowing 436.6 total ypg. The Rebels have struggled against both the run and the pass, as they are surrendering 206.9 rushing ypg and 4.7 ypc. Opponents are managing 229.8 ypg through the air with 13 touchdowns and only six interception. Another 18 touchdowns have been scored via the ground attack. Ashlee Palmer has been very active for the defense, as he leads the squad with 76 total tackles. Greg Hardy, the SEC's most feared pass rusher, has 16 TFLs, including eight sacks. Ole Miss permitted 293 rushing yards to Arkansas last weekend, an ugly showing by the defense. The Razorbacks scored six offensive touchdowns and moved the ball with little resistance.
As expected, Auburn had a hard time moving the ball against LSU last weekend, as the offense finished with only 296 total yards, including 97 rushing yards. Quarterback Brandon Cox did play well for the Tigers, as he completed 18-of-28 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Auburn did not commit a single turnover and actually won the time of possession battle by well over five minutes, but the Tigers didn't do enough to score the victory. Auburn is scoring 25.4 ppg this season to go along with 330.2 total ypg. The Tigers are racking up 157.0 rushing ypg and have scored 15 of their 22 offensive touchdowns on the ground, but the fact that they are gaining just 3.7 ypc in the ground game suggests that there is room for improvement. As for the passing game, Cox has connected on 59.6 percent of his passes for 1,263 yards and six touchdowns against seven interceptions. Rod Smith leads the club in receiving with 33 grabs for 453 yards and four touchdowns.
With Auburn leading 24-23 in the final minute of last weekend's showdown, LSU was in position to kick the game-winning field goal. What ensued will go down as one of the most surprising and gutsy calls of the year, as LSU threw the ball into the end zone with only a few seconds remaining and scored a touchdown. Through three quarters of play, Auburn had only surrendered 13 points, but the team permitted LSU to rack up 17 points over the final 15 minutes. Opponents are scoring 17.4 ppg against Auburn, which is yielding 305.1 total ypg. The Tigers have been solid against both the run and the pass, permitting 3.5 ypc on the ground and 9.8 yards per pass completion. Chris Evans paces the defense with 47 total tackles.
