Nebraska enters this contest having lost three straight games, the longest slide for the program since the 2005 campaign. Last weekend, the Cornhuskers fell to 1-3 in the Big 12 standings with an embarrassing 36-14 loss to Texas A&M in Lincoln. Following that ugly defeat, Steve Pederson was asked to leave his post as athletic director, and former Nebraska head coach Tom Osborne has taken over as A.D. on an interim basis. The hope is that the move will revitalize a once mighty football program.
As for Texas, it has won back-to-back games to move to 6-2 overall, including 2-2 in league play. The Longhorns are fresh off a 31-10 romp over Baylor and have outscored their last two opponents by an 87-13 margin.
Texas holds a 7-4 series edge over Nebraska, including a 22-20 triumph over the Huskers in Lincoln last season.
Not only has Nebraska lost the last three games, the club has only scored 34 total points in the 12 quarters of football. Against Texas A&M last weekend, the Cornhuskers were shut out in the second half after scoring touchdowns in each of the first two quarters. The offense did finish with 405 total yards, but three lost fumbles were the difference in the game. Marlon Lucky broke his own school record by making 13 catches, the most in a single game by a running back. Unfortunately, 288th consecutive sellout crown at Memorial Stadium had little to cheer about. The Cornhuskers are averaging 26.6 ppg and 422.0 total ypg. Lucky leads the team in both rushing and receiving with 721 yards on the ground and 49 catches for 388 yards. He has seven total touchdowns. As for quarterback Sam Keller, he has completed 62.8 percent of his passes for 2,124 yards and 12 scores with 10 interceptions.
For years, Nebraska carried the reputation of a fierce defensive team. As hard as it is to believe for fans of the program, opponents are now eager to play the Cornhuskers and exploit the weak defense. In the last six games, only once has Nebraska surrendered fewer than 36 points. Two weeks ago, the squad yielded 45 points to Oklahoma State in Lincoln, proof of just how bad things have gotten. Against Texas A&M last week, the Huskers surrendered four touchdown drives covering more than 70 yards. Nebraska yielded 359 rushing yards and was bullied on its home field. Overall this season, the Huskers are giving up 31.9 ppg and 457.4 total ypg, as they have struggled mightily against the run and the pass. Opponents have already scored 22 rushing touchdowns against Nebraska.
Texas scored three offensive touchdowns in last weekend's win over Baylor. Chris Ogbonnaya and Vondrell McGee both had short touchdown runs, and Colt McCoy threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Nate Jones. The Longhorns finished with 470 total yards, including 293 from McCoy. Still, the signal caller threw a pair of interceptions, a program all season for a player hyped as a Heisman candidate at the start of the campaign. Texas is averaging 34.6 ppg and 437.8 total ypg, strong numbers by almost any standards. McCoy has thrown 12 interceptions in eight games, but he has managed 15 touchdown passes, 2,169 yards and a 67.3 percent completion rating. Jones is tops among the receivers with 49 catches for 552 yards and four touchdowns, while Jamaal Charles paces the ground attack with 722 yards and eight scores.
Baylor finished with a grand total of eight rushing yards against Texas last weekend, as the Longhorns allowed no room to roam. While the Bears were able to post 284 passing yards, Texas came up with four interceptions. Marcus Griffin made a huge play for the defense, as he returned an interception 91 yards for a touchdown. Opponents are scoring just 19.2 ppg against Texas, which is allowing 306.0 total ypg. Stopping the run has been a strength of the defense, as foes are only managing 89.4 ypg on the ground on 2.8 ypc. With 17 sacks and 17 takeaways, there have been a decent number of big plays made by the 'Horns. Ryan Palmer leads the defense with 58 tackles, and Griffin checks in with 55 stops and three interceptions.
