Last weekend, the Buckeyes recorded a 24-17 decision over Michigan State in Columbus, as the Spartans scored touchdowns on an interception return and a fumble recovery to make the game much closer than it should have been. The Buckeyes are now a perfect 8-0, including 4-0 in league play, and seven of the victories have come by double figures.
Penn State is currently riding its second three-game winning streak of the season. The Nittany Lions are 6-2 overall, and their only two losses came against Michigan and Illinois on the road by a combined total of 12 points. Last weekend, they showed a great deal of toughness by holding on for a 36-31 road victory over Indiana.
Ohio State and Penn State have each won 11 games in the 22-game series between the programs. Last season, the Buckeyes beat the Nittany Lions, 28-6, and the teams owned the exact same national rankings at that time that they boast presently.
Ohio State was blanked for the final 21 minutes of last weekend's game against Michigan State, as the offense seemed to hit a wall. Prior to the drought, Todd Boeckman threw a pair of touchdown passes -- a 14-yarder to Jake Ballard and a 50-yard strike to Brian Robiskie. Also, Chris Wells capped a short drive with a five-yard touchdown run. The Buckeyes finished with 422 total yards, including 229 on the ground. Wells rushed for 221 yards on 31 carries, combining power with a good burst for a big back. Boeckman was steady as usual, as he has successfully filled the void created by the departure of Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Troy Smith. Under the guidance of Boeckman, the Buckeyes are averaging 34.2 ppg and 415.0 total ypg. The quarterback has completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 1,546 yards and 18 touchdowns against only seven interceptions. Robiskie has 37 grabs for 728 yards and seven touchdowns, and Wells has rushed for 863 yards and seven scores.
Sure, Michigan State scored 17 points against Ohio State last weekend, but neither of the two touchdowns scored by the Spartans were generated by the offense. The Buckeyes have proven to be one of the nation's premier defensive clubs, and they held MSU to 185 total yards. Stopping the run is a specialty of the club, as it held MSU to 59 rushing yards on 28 attempts. Only nine first downs were generated by Michigan State in the contest. Through eight games, the Buckeyes are giving up only 7.9 ppg and 208.5 total ypg, numbers that are nothing short of sensational. The fact that Ohio State has yielded four touchdowns to opposing offenses in 32 quarters of football is borderline comical. Foes are gaining 2.1 yards per rushing attempt and 8.4 yards per pass completion. James Laurinaitis leads the defense with 64 total tackles, and he has registered four sacks and two interceptions.
Last weekend, Penn State posted 25 first downs and 387 total yards against Indiana en route to the narrow road victory. The Nittany Lions established tremendous balance, posting 192 rushing yards and 195 passing yards. Anthony Morelli threw a pair of touchdown passes, and three different players rushed for at least 40 yards. Overall this season, Penn State is averaging 33.1 ppg and 405.9 total ypg. The Nittany Lions have racked up 31 total touchdowns, including 18 on the ground. Rodney Kinlaw has been the most effective ground gainer for Penn State, as he has rushed for 728 yards and six touchdowns. As for Morelli, he has completed 59.5 percent of his passes for 1,739 yards and 13 touchdowns against seven interceptions. Jordan Norwood, Deon Butler and Derrick Williams form a solid group of receivers.
Against Indiana, Penn State did a tremendous job against the run, limiting the Hoosiers to 68 rushing yards on 30 attempts, an average of 2.3 ypc. Unfortunately, the defense was not nearly as effective against the pass, as Indiana was able to complete 30-of-48 throws for 318 yards. Opponents are scoring 15.0 ppg against the Nittany Lions, who are allowing 279.5 total ypg. The run defense has been the strength of the defensive unit, as PSU is limiting foes to 79.8 ypg on 2.3 ypc. With 19 total takeaways and 35 sacks, a wealth of big plays have been made. Maurice Evans has been a force, as he has already registered 10.5 sacks. Dan Connor has made 76 total tackles, including 10 TFLs, and is undoubtedly one of the nation's finest linebackers.
