Sun Devils and Bears meet in the desert

Tempe, AZ (Sports Network) - The seventh-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils sit atop the Pac-10 standings this week, but put that lofty position in jeopardy as they welcome the 18th-ranked California Golden Bears to Tempe for a conference showdown.

First-year coach Dennis Erickson has made an immediate impact in the desert, as his Sun Devils are 7-0 for the first time since 1996 and just the eighth time in school history. ASU was idle a week ago, but despite the unblemished record, the Sun Devils are still looking for respect, as California represents the first ranked foe for ASU this season.

Jeff Tedford's Golden Bears opened 2007 with five straight wins, but have hit a wall of late, dropping two straight in-conference, including last week's 30-21 setback at UCLA. This will be the 27th all-time meeting between these two teams, with the series knotted up at 13-13. The Golden Bears have tied things up thanks to winning the last four meetings, including a 49-21 decision in Berkeley last season.

The Golden Bears put up just 21 points last weekend, marking the lowest scoring output of the season for the team. Quarterback Nate Longshore, who missed the prior game due to injury, returned to the lineup against the Bruins and did his best to lead the team to victory, throwing for 232 yards and a season-high three TDs. Longshore has been effective on the year, connecting on 64 percent of his passes, for 1,369 yards, with 10 TDs and just five interceptions. It helps to have a pair of stellar targets downfield in the form of DeSean Jackson (41 receptions, 453 yards, four TDs) and Lavelle Hawkins (39 receptions, for 559 yards, four TDs). The ground game is a real strength of this offense as well. The team as a whole is netting 177.7 yards per game rushing, on 5.1 yards per carry. Tailback Justin Forsett has been superb in the backfield, averaging 5.0 yards per carry and 115.9 yards per game. Forsett has amassed 811 yards on the year and is responsible for 10 of the team's 17 rushing scores to date.

The California defense has struggled with consistency this season and that has led to a scoring defense of 26.1 ppg. The rush defense is yielding 133.9 yards per game and the pass defense is allowing 245.1 yards per outing. The unit has recorded 18 takeaways this season, but has struggled in generating a pass rush, with just 15 sacks in the first seven games. Junior linebacker Anthony Felder has been all over the field for Cal and leads the team in tackles (72), with two sacks and one interception. Fellow junior LB Worrell Williams (63 tackles) is a close second in terms of tackles, with a sack and interception to his credit. Yet another junior, Zack Follett (29 tackles, team-high 5.5 TFLs, team-high 2.5 sacks) rounds out a solid linebacking corps in Berkeley.

It was another second-half eruption two weeks ago for ASU, as the Sun Devils were able to distance themselves from the Washington Huskies and remain perfect on the season. Quarterback Rudy Carpenter threw a pair of TD strikes, while tailback Keegan Herring rushed for 119 yards, including a 76-yard TD scamper in the win. This is a potent and balanced offense for ASU, with the team putting up 37.7 ppg, on 437.3 yards of total offense. The ground game is generating 177.1 yards per game, while the passing attack adds 260.1. Carpenter has been outstanding under center, completing 66.3 percent of his passes, for 1,730 yards, with 17 TDs. His top outlet in the vertical game is junior Mike Jones, who at 6-4, 210, is a big target. Jones leads the team in receptions (24), receiving yards (396) and TDs (five). Ryan Torain and Herring have worked well together in the backfield this season. Torain is netting 5.0 yards per carry and has scored five times. Herring nets 6.6 yards per carry and has four TDs to his credit on the ground.

Unlike a lot of Pac-10 schools, Arizona State relies heavily on the play of its defense, especially late in games. The team is giving up just 15.0 ppg thus far, on 304.3 yards of total offense. Most importantly, the unit has played "lights out" in the fourth quarter, allowing a measly 1.7 ppg over the final 15 minutes. With 20 sacks and 17 forced turnovers, this defense has proved to be opportunistic. Senior LB Robert James has been a great leader in the middle of the field for ASU. The 5-11, 230-pounder leads the team in tackles (66) and TFLs (8.0) and also has 2.5 sacks and three INTs on the year. Junior safety Troy Nolan (27 tackles) has been a ballhawk in the secondary, having already recorded a team-high five interceptions. Sophomore DE Dexter Davis has been a force along the defensive line. Of his 13 total tackles, half (6.5) have been sacks.
