Surprising Huskies set to host Bulls

East Hartford, CT (Sports Network) - The Connecticut Huskies will try to remain atop the Big East standings this weekend, as they host the 11th- ranked South Florida Bulls at Rentschler Field.

It may be early in the year in terms of conference play, but nevertheless, it is the Huskies who stand atop the Big East with a perfect 2-0 mark. Most recently, the team defeated Louisville, 21-17, on October 19th to improve to a solid 6-1 overall. It was the fourth win in as many tries at home this season for UConn, which is 22-8 all-time at Rentschler Field. The Huskies, though, have never defeated a ranked team at this level, losing their 10 previous attempts.

As for USF, it has been one of the Cinderella stories in college football this season, going from unranked to the second-ranked in a matter of a few weeks. The Bulls however, met their match last week, dropping a 30-27 decision at Rutgers on October 18th. The loss snapped the team's eight- game winning streak and dropped it to a still solid 6-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

USF, which had never been ranked prior to this season, has won three of the four all-time meetings with UConn. Last season, the Bulls easily handled the Huskies, 38-16, in Tampa.

Behind their balanced attack, which is gaining 171.1 ypg on the ground and 217.9 ypg through the air, the Bulls have been able to produce a solid 34.0 ppg this season. In the team's last game, however, USF was limited to 362 total yards, including just 115 on the ground, in a 30-27 loss to Rutgers. The club was penalized 10 times for 99 yards and it also struggled greatly on third downs, converting just 2-of-14 attempts. Quarterback Matt Grothe, once again, carried the offense, as he rushed for a team-high 58 yards and a touchdown, in addition to throwing for 247 yards and another score. Grothe, though, was sacked seven times and that is surprising considering USF had given up just eight sacks in its first six games combined. Still, Grothe has done it all for this offense all season long and he has accounted for 1,772 total yards (404 rushing) and 13 touchdowns (five rushing). Taurus Johnson is one of Grothe's main outlets, but the team's leading receiver with 22 catches, is expected to miss the next few weeks with a sprained ankle.

For the Bulls, their strength resides on the defensive side of the ball, where they are limiting their opponents to 17.7 ppg and 300.9 total ypg. The unit has done a good job against both the run (115.4 ypg) and pass (185.4 ypg), and it has also forced 24 turnovers. Against Rutgers though, USF was burnt for 400 total yards, including 170 on the ground. The defense also had its string of 15 straight games without allowing a 100-yard rusher snapped, as Rutgers' Ray Rice went off for 181 yards. On a positive note, the Bulls did force three turnovers and that helped keep the game close, although it wasn't enough in the end. George Selvie was held to just two tackles and that was a big surprise considering he leads the nation in TFLs (21.5) and sacks (11.5).

The Huskies aren't one of the more explosive teams in the Big East, but they do make the most of their opportunities, averaging a solid 31.4 ppg despite gaining a modest 365.3 total ypg. The offense never seems to be itself and that can be attributed to its ability to protect the ball, committing just nine turnovers in seven games. Despite two turnovers and gaining just 305 total yards versus Louisville, UConn was able to come out victorious thanks to an Andre Dixon five-yard touchdown run with 1:32 left in the game. Dixon finished the contest with 115 yards on 22 carries, and he also led the team with three catches for 55 yards. In five games this season, Dixon leads the team with 443 rushing yards behind a solid 5.8 yard per carry average. Quarterback Tyler Lorenzen was also effective against Louisville, as he rushed for 56 yards on 10 carries while completing 9-of-18 tosses for 130 yards and a score. The versatile gun slinger ranks third on the team in rushing (225), and he has also completed 60.8 percent of his pass attempts for 1,389. He could use a few more passing touchdowns (eight), but at least he has done a good job of avoiding mistakes, throwing just three interceptions.

Like USF, UConn has been at its best on defense, ranking first in the Big East in scoring (12.7 ypg) and second in total yards (272.3 ypg). The unit has also done a good job in forcing turnovers, as it has generated 20, including 16 on interceptions. Facing one of the premier offenses around, the Huskies did a tremendous job in limiting Louisville to only 321 total yards of offense. The defense also forced three interceptions, while the special teams received a 74-yard punt return for a touchdown by Larry Taylor. Scott Lutrus led the charge with 18 tackles and an interception, while Danny Lansanah added 15 stops and a pick of his own. Another player worth noting is Robert Vaughn, who leads UConn and the Big East with five interceptions.
