Below is a compilation of The Sports Network's predictions for the top games in Week 9 of the college football season. (Detailed previews for each game can be found by following the "Top 25 scoreboard" link within the FBS college football section of sportsnetwork.com)
(2) Boston College (7-0) at (8) Virginia Tech (6-1), Thursday, 7:30 pm
This should be one of the better games of the year. Virginia Tech certainly has the homefield advantage in this one, as Lane Stadium is a tough place for any team to come in and leave with a victory. However, Matt Ryan is as poised a QB as there is in the nation, and he will find a way to move the chains enough to put a couple of scores on the board. With a shutdown defense of their own, the Eagles should be able to prevail in this one.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Boston College 20, Virginia Tech 13
- Scott Haynes
(6) West Virginia (6-1) at (25) Rutgers (5-2), Saturday, 12 pm
This is obviously a huge game for both teams, as the winner will have the inside track to the Big East title. Both clubs are well-coached and balanced, and each will surely lean on its big time tailback. With the support of their home crowd, expect the Knights to pull out another narrow win behind the power running of Ray Rice.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Rutgers 34, West Virginia 31
- Ralph Lauro
Mississippi State (4-4) at (14) Kentucky (6-2), Saturday, 12:30 pm
Kentucky is clearly a better team than Mississippi State, and will prove it this weekend. Andre Woodson will pad his already gaudy stats as he continues to audition for NFL clubs.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Kentucky 41, Mississippi State 13
- Pat Taggart
Iowa State (1-7) at (13) Missouri (6-1), Saturday, 2 pm
There is no reason to believe that Iowa State can win this game on the road. Expect the Tigers to jump on top early and never look back.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Missouri 31, Iowa State 10
- Pat Taggart
(9) U-S-C (6-1) at (5) Oregon (6-1), Saturday, 3 pm
The Trojans are still the team to beat in the Pac-10, regardless of the conference standings right now. The better offense resides in Eugene, while the better defense comes to town with USC. This is a huge opportunity for Dennis Dixon and Jonathan Stewart to show the nation what they are made of. Behind the potent duo, Oregon will find a way to get the victory and in the process, all but end the reign of dominance for the Trojans in-conference.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Oregon 33, USC 30
- Scott Haynes
(11) South Florida (6-1) at Connecticut (6-1), Saturday, 3:30 pm
Each team relies on its defense a good amount and that should make for a hard-fought and low-scoring affair. USF though, has more weapons on offense and defense and it should be able to get past a UConn team that hasn't been tested much thus far.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: South Florida 27, Connecticut 13
- Ralph Lauro
(20) Georgia (5-2) vs. (9) Florida (5-2), Saturday, 3:30 pm
Expect the Gators to continue their dominance over the Bulldogs with another victory this weekend. Tim Tebow will outplay Stafford, and the Gators will put forth a strong defensive effort after last weekend's struggles.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Florida 31, Georgia 14
- Pat Taggart
Minnesota (1-7) at (19) Michigan (6-2), Saturday, 3:30 pm
Don't expect this game to be close, as Michigan will put up huge offensive numbers with or without Mike Hart. The Wolverines should be comfortably ahead by intermission.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Michigan 42, Minnesota 17
- Pat Taggart
Nebraska (4-4) at (17) Texas (6-2), Saturday, 3:30 pm
It will be interesting to see how Nebraska responds after three straight ugly losses and the shakeup in the A.D.'s office. Texas is the smart pick, as the hometown crowd will fuel the 'Horns to victory.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Texas 34, Nebraska 17
- Pat Taggart
(21) Virginia (7-1) at NC State (2-5), Saturday, 4:30 pm
At some point an opponent is going to make the Cavaliers pay for playing so many close games, but NC State is not that team this week. Expect Jameel Sewell to carry Virginia, or more precisely, push it to a win with his leadership.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Virginia 31, NC State 17
- Gregg Xenakes
Ole Miss (2-6) at (23) Auburn (5-3), Saturday, 6 pm
Expect Auburn to take care of business in front of the home crowd. After getting crushed on their home field last weekend, it is hard to imagine the Rebels entering this weekend's tilt with much confidence.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Auburn 31, Ole Miss 13
- Pat Taggart
(12) Kansas (7-0) at Texas A&M (6-2), Saturday, 7 pm
Everyone is waiting for Kansas to come back to Earth and lose a game, and this will be the week it happens. Texas A&M will get a ton of support from the hometown crowd, and the Aggies actually have the type of ground attack that can challenge one of the nation's premier defensive units. Expect a thriller.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Texas A&M 23, Kansas 20
- Pat Taggart
(15) South Carolina (6-2) at Tennessee (4-3), Saturday, 7:45
Expect a close game from start to finish, as South Carolina and Tennessee are evenly matched. The Vols have their problems on defense, but the Gamecocks aren't exactly explosive offensively. Give a narrow edge to the home team.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Tennessee 27, South Carolina 24
- Pat Taggart
(1) Ohio State (8-0) at (24) Penn State (6-2), Saturday, 8 pm
Penn State has won all five of its home games by 20 or more points. Still, the Buckeyes have to be considered the favorite this week despite the difficulty of playing the Nittany Lions on the road. Expect this game to be the best of the college football weekend.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Ohio State 20, Penn State 17
- Pat Taggart
(18) California (5-2) at (7) Arizona State (7-0), Saturday, 10 pm
The Golden Bears have certainly played the tougher competition to date, but with that said, the Sun Devils are for real. Performing well in a marquee matchup is something that could propel ASU to an improbable Pac-10 crown.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Arizona State 31, California 23
- Scott Haynes
New Mexico State (4-4) at (16) Hawaii (7-0), Saturday, 11:59 pm
The return of quarterback Chase Holbrook is certainly reason to give New Mexico State a fighting chance in this game, but take wideout Chris Williams out of the equation and the Aggies just might find themselves on the losing end of another meeting similar to that of the Boise State affair.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Hawaii 51, New Mexico State 27
- Gregg Xenakes
