Ryan, a Heisman hopeful, went 25-of-52 for 285 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Eagles (8-0, 4-0 ACC), who scored 14 points in the final two minutes, 11 seconds to escape the recent upset bug that has hit second-ranked teams in recent weeks.
Down 10-0 and held to just 159 yards of offense to that point, the Eagles finally got on the board with 2:11 left in the game. Starting at their own eight-yard-line, the Eagles went the distance of the field with Ryan ending the drive with a 16-yard TD pass to Rich Gunnell. Three 20-plus-yard pass plays kept the drive alive, giving Boston College life.
The Eagles then recovered the ensuing onsides kick, starting at their own 34, and marched down to the Tech 14 when Ryan appeared to give the Eagles the lead with a TD pass with just 27 seconds left. However, a holding call negated the play and put BC in a 2nd-and-20.
After an incompletion, Ryan found himself scrambling for his life before finding Callender wide open in the end zone with 11 seconds left for the win, 14-10.
Callender ended with 38 receiving yards and 29 rushing yards for Boston College, which avoided being the fourth straight second-ranked team to lose in as many weeks and is 8-0 for the first time since starting the 1942 season with the same record.
Boston College ended with 317 yards of offense.
Sean Glennon got the start under center for the injured Tyrod Taylor and ended 15-of-25 for 149 yards with one touchdown for the Hokies (6-2, 3-1), who had a five-game win streak halted. Glennon started for the first time since losing his job following a 48-7 setback to then-second-ranked LSU on September 8.
Branden Ore ran for a season-high 97 yards and Eddie Royal had four catches for 77 yards for Virginia Tech, which took advantage of inclement weather early.
The downpour held both offenses in check for most of the first half. Boston College failed to get its passing game going and Virginia Tech got only seven points on the board.
The Hokies bridged the first and second quarters with a 15-play, 91-yard drive. Tech converted four third-down plays during the drive, including the eight-yard TD pass from Glennon to Royal along the right side of the end zone.
Replays appeared to show the Royal did not have possession of the ball while he fell out of bounds with 10:31 left in the half, but the play stood regardless.
Tech added three points to its lead in the third quarter when Jud Dunleavy booted a 44-yard field goal with 5:33 left until the fourth quarter.
Game Notes
Boston College avoided getting shutout for the first time in 122 games. The last time the Eagles were held off the scoreboard was on October 8, 1998 in a 17-0 loss to, coincidentally, Virginia Tech...BC ended the '42 season 8-2...Taylor missed the game with a high ankle sprain suffered in Tech's last game at Duke...Brandon Robinson led BC with five catches for 86 yards.
