Jayhawks cruise past Aggies to stay undefeated
College Station, TX (Sports Network) - Brandon McAnderson collected 183 yards on 21 carries with two touchdowns as the 12th-ranked Kansas Jayhawks defeated Texas A&M, 19-11, in a Big 12 matchup at Kyle Field.Todd Reesing had 180 yards on 21-of-33 passes for Kansas, and Dezmon Briscoe caught a team-high six passes for 49 yards.
Kansas (8-0, 4-0 Big 12), which won for the first time at College Station, headed into the game as one of the five remaining undefeated clubs in the nation.
Texas A&M's Stephen McGee was 24-of-44 for 244 yards and a touchdown, while Martellus Bennett had a game-high eight receptions for 91 yards.
The Aggies (6-3, 3-2) had won seven straight against the Jayhawks,.
Kansas took control of the game in the second half, scoring on its first four possessions. After a 31-yard field goal by Scott Webb, Texas A&M's Justin Brantly shanked a punt, giving Kansas excellent field position. Six plays later, McAnderson bulled his way six yards into the end zone to cap the 54- yard drive. Webb made it 13-0 with a 32-yard field goal in the latter stages of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Mike Goodson fumbled the exchange from McGee and Kansas defensive end John Larson fell on it. On the ensuing play, McAnderson ran 40 yards to the Aggies three-yard line, and finished the drive three plays later with a three-yard touchdown run to make it 19-0. The Jayhawks failed to convert the two-point conversion.
A 21-yard field goal by Matt Szymanski prevented the Aggies from being shut out. Webb missed a 33-yard field goal, and the Aggies marched 80 yards down the field on six plays. McGee completed a 32-yard pass to Roger Holland in the back of the end zone with 2:06 remaining in regulation, and converted the two- point conversion to make it 19-11.
Defense and missed opportunities were the story in the first half, as the teams battled to a scoreless draw.
McAnderson dropped a pass in the end zone, forcing the Jayhawks to attempt a 27-yard field with under six minutes left in the opening quarter. However, Webb's kick was blocked by the Aggies' Chris Harrington and Kansas came away empty-handed.
Webb missed a 31-yard field goal as the ball bounced off the left upright with just over eight minutes remaining in the half.
Game Notes
Kansas has not started a season 8-0 since 1909...Kansas has shut out opponents in the first half in six of eight games this season...Despite the loss, Texas A&M leads the all-time series, 7-2.
