On his way to his personal career-high and the fourth-highest rushing total in school history, Charles had 217 yards rushing in the fourth quarter alone, as the Longhorns (7-2, 3-2 Big 12) earned head coach Mack Brown his 100th career victory at the school.
"I just came out here and tried to run downhill as hard as I could," Charles said. "I know I've been going through some stuff, like fumbling the ball, and I just wanted to get over that. The offensive line opened some holes (for me). And Nebraskas defense was good."
Colt McCoy completed 12-of-28 passes for 181 yards, most often finding Quan Cosby, who had five catches for 113 yards, or Nate Jones, who hauled in four passes for 33 yards.
"Give Nebraska a tremendous amount of credit for all the criticism they have been under the last three weeks to come in here and play as well and as hard as they did," Brown said. "I thought they did a great job coaching. (Their defense) frustrated us a little bit in the first half and then we came back and we were able to get settled down and make a few adjustments and play really well in the second half."
Nebraska's Sam Keller was 23-for-35 passing for 298 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but also coughed up a key late-game fumble and was knocked out of the game on the Huskers' final drive. Marlon Lucky carried 24 times for 111 yards and Nate Swift caught six passes for 112 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Cornhuskers (4-5, 1-4) dropped their fourth consecutive conference contest.
The loss marks the first time since 1961 that the Cornhuskers have dropped four straight games of any kind.
With a little more than 10 minutes remaining in the game, Nebraska's offense, stagnant all second half after a breakout second quarter, again went three- and-out. Dan Titchener's punt pinned UT inside its own five, but on the third play from scrimmage, Charles shook one defender and busted it outside before simply outrunning the defense on his way to an 86-yard touchdown and a 21-17 lead.
McCoy was stopped inches short of the end zone on a second straight failed two-point conversion, and Nebraska began its drive at the 25-yard line with 7:33 on the clock. Keller hit Swift for 35 yards down to the Texas 40 on the second play, and after a completion to Lucky in the flat the Huskers had moved inside the 30. But Frank Okam pressured and stripped Keller in the pocket, then recovered the fumble at the Texas 36.
Texas regained possession with six minutes to go against a tired Huskers defense, and on a 3rd-and-3 from the Nebraska 40, Charles broke free from a crowded line of scrimmage for the difference-making 40-yard score.
Keller moved the Huskers inside the Texas 25, but was knocked out of the game on a 2nd-and-10 with just under three minutes to go on a hit by Longhorns end Eddie Jones. Junior backup Joe Ganz came on and found Purify for a four-yard touchdown and Swift for a two-point conversion with under two minutes remaining.
Texas took an early 3-0 lead on Ryan Bailey's 38-yard field goal with just over three minutes to go in the first .
Nebraska answered with an 11-play drive capped by a 31-yard Alex Henery field goal to tie the game a little more than a minute into the second quarter.
Following a missed field goal by Bailey that wasted a 12-play Longhorns drive, the Huskers took over with 3:10 left in second. Nebraska took a 10-3 lead with just 33 seconds remaining in the half when Keller found Nate Swift down the seam for a 24-yard touchdown.
Nebraska came out of the locker room and hit on a nearly identical pattern to Swift's less than three minutes into the second half to cap a five-play, 80- yard drive and take a commanding 17-3 edge.
With 7:27 to go in the third, Texas began a drive at its own 34 that spanned 3:31 in 11 plays, but again stalled in Huskers territory. Bailey knocked home a 47-yarder, and then the Longhorns defense produced a key three-and-out stop.
McCoy hit Quan Cosby for 31 yards on the opening play of the ensuing drive to move to the Nebraska 34. But Charles was stopped for short gains on consecutive plays and McCoy misfired on a hurried pass to Nate Jones, forcing UT to settle for another Bailey kick, this one from 49 yards out.
Lucky rushed for one first down on Nebraska's next possession, but the Huskers couldn't move past its own 40 and had to punt it away. The Longhorns then rediscovered their option offense, scoring a quick-strike touchdown on three straight rushing plays. Charles took an inside handoff and went 25 yards to the Nebraska 49. McCoy kept on the following play and went 24 yards straight up the middle before Charles made it a two-point game when he broke into the secondary and eluded one Husker for a 25-yard touchdown.
Texas' two-point conversion attempt went awry when McCoy's pass sailed out of the back of the end zone, leaving Nebraska clinging to a two-point lead with more than 12 minutes to go.
The 'Horns got the ball back just over a minute later with plenty of time to drive for a go-ahead score. But McCoy was hit on the release three plays into the possession, and Nebraska lineman Zach Potter snatched the loose ball out of the air for an interception at the Huskers 41.
"Our guys gave everything they had and left everything they had on the field today," Nebraska head coach Bill Callahan said afterward. "I think we can build on that as we get ready for Kansas. They gave a great effort today. That's all I can talk about is the effort this team gave. Texas made the plays that we did not make in the second half. You ask your team to empty their tank and they gave everything they had today. We just came up on the short end of the stick. I am awfully proud of these players and the effort that they gave today."
