Ohio State (9-0) remained atop the BCS standings, released on Sunday, with a .9756 average after an impressive win, 37-17, on the road at Penn State. The Buckeyes host Wisconsin on Saturday.
Boston College (8-0), led by two Matt Ryan touchdown passes in the final 2:11, came back from a 10-point deficit to edge the Hokies, 14-10, at Virginia Tech on Thursday night. The Hokies (6-2) dropped out of the BCS top-10, from eighth to 11th. BC has a .9559 average in the BCS, and hosts Florida State on Saturday.
Idle LSU (7-1) is still very much in the national championship conversation, but saw its BCS average drop from .9114 to .8879 during the off week. The Tigers travel to Alabama, 17th in the BCS, on Saturday.
Arizona State (8-0) closed the gap behind No. 3 LSU after a 31-20 win over California, bumping its BCS average from .7629 to .8493. The Sun Devils travel to Oregon Saturday for a game with Pac-10 and national title implications. The Ducks (7-1) firmed up their hold on fifth in the BCS standings with a 24-17 win over USC.
The Trojans fell from 12th to 19th in the BCS, and now appear to be a longshot to earn a coveted BCS bid.
Idle Oklahoma (7-1) held on to sixth. The Sooners head back to the field Saturday when they host Texas A&M.
West Virginia (7-1) trounced Rutgers 31-3, and stayed at seventh. Surprising Kansas (8-0) topped Texas A&M, 19-11 to move up a spot to eighth. Missouri (7-1) routed Iowa State 42-28 to jump up four spots to ninth, and Georgia (6-2) jumped from 18th to 10th after downing Florida, 42-30, at the Cocktail Party.
Michigan (7-2), written off after embarrassing home losses to FCS school Appalachian State and Oregon to open the season, downed Minnesota, 34-10, for its seventh straight win, and is still in line for a shot at Ohio State and the Big Ten title on Nov. 17.
Connecticut (7-1) edged South Florida, 22-15, in a matchup of Big East Cinderella stories, to move up from 23rd to 13th.
The Western Athletic Conference's Hawaii (8-0) stomped New Mexico State, 50-13, to move up three spots to 14th. For the first time this season, the Warriors are not the only school not from a BCS conference to crack the top-25, as Boise State (7-1), a familiar BCS crasher, entered the rankings at 22nd after defeating Fresno State, 34-21.
The final BCS standings will be released on December 2.
The BCS title game will be played in New Orleans on January 7. The other top bowl games -- Rose, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta -- will still play their traditional games on New Year's Day or soon after. The BCS title game rotates among the four traditional sites -- Pasadena, Miami, New Orleans and Arizona -- giving each of the venues two games in one particular season.
The champions from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten, Big 12, Big East, Pac-10 and SEC make up six of the 10 teams in the five BCS games. The other four spots go to at-large teams that have at least nine wins and are ranked among the top 14 in the final BCS standings.
One team from among the champions of Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference, the Sun Belt Conference or the Western Athletic Conference automatically qualify for a BCS game if either: such team is ranked in the top 12 of the final BCS standings, or, such team is ranked in the top 16 of the final BCS standings and its ranking in the final BCS standings is higher than that of a champion of a conference that has an annual automatic berth in one of the BCS bowls.
The BCS system uses a pair of human polls -- the Harris Interactive and the USA Today -- as well as six computer rankings. Each poll counts one-third toward the overall score, while the average of the computers completes the formula.
