Florida State managed to halt a two-game skid last weekend with a 25-6 triumph over Duke. The Seminoles are 5-3 overall and need just one more victory to qualify for bowl consideration. However, with Boston College, Virginia Tech and Florida remaining on the schedule, all on the road, the best chance for FSU to capture a win may be on November 17th at home against Maryland.
Boston College is off to its best start since 1942 when the team also opened with eight consecutive victories. After the offense struggled for the first 57 minutes of the game against Virginia Tech last Thursday, the Eagles scored two touchdowns in the final 2:11 of that game to beat the Hokies and remain undefeated. With games against Maryland, Clemson and Miami remaining following this tilt, the road to an undefeated regular season appears challenging for Boston College, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to doubt the Eagles.
Florida State holds a 3-2 series edge over BC, but the Eagles won last season's meeting by a 24-19 final.
The biggest problem on offense for Florida State in many games this season has been inconsistency at the quarterback position. That was not an issue last weekend against Duke, however, as Drew Weatherford took every snap and completed 35-of-47 passes for 339 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. Richard Goodman made 11 catches for 73 yards, while De'Cody Fagg recorded nine receptions for 134 yards. Preston Parker showed his versatility by scoring touchdowns as both a runner and a receiver in that game. Leading the ground attack was Antone Smith, as he rushed for 146 yards on 23 carries. Florida State is averaging 23.9 ppg and 369.8 total ypg, numbers that fall well short of the figures that the Seminoles consistently posted in recent years. Considering the power of the passing attack in the past, it is hard to believe that the program only has 10 touchdown passes through eight games. Both Weatherford and Xavier Lee have seen significant time under center, and it certainly appears that Weatherford will be under center this weekend as long as he plays well.
The fact that Florida State limited Duke to six points last weekend suggests that the defense put forth a stellar effort. The Seminoles yielded the only points of the game in the fourth quarter, as the Blue Devils drove 47 yards for a score in six plays. Overall, Duke managed just 222 total yards, including nine rushing yards on 19 attempts. The FSU defense was only on the field for 20:22, as the Seminoles had possession of the ball for nearly 40 minutes. Opponents are scoring 18.1 ppg while gaining 307.0 total ypg against Florida State, which is yielding only 93.9 rushing ypg on 2.8 ypc. With 18 takeaways and 18 sacks, FSU has made a solid number of big plays. Geno Hayes and Derek Nicholson lead the club with 58 tackles apiece, and Hayes has posted 14 TFLs.
Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan entered the game against Virginia Tech as a legitimate Heisman candidate, and although he completed fewer than 50 percent of passes and was intercepted twice, Ryan may have strengthened his candidacy. How is that possible? Well, Ryan threw two touchdown passes in the final 2:11, showing all the poise and toughness needed to lead a team. The first touchdown capped a 91-yard drive, as Ryan threw a perfect pass to the corner of the end zone to Rich Gunnell. Then, already in position to kick the game-tying field goal, Ryan tossed a 24-yard strike to Andre Callender with 11 seconds remaining. Overall this season, Ryan has completed 61 percent of his passes for this Boston College team that is averaging 32.0 ppg and 434.8 total ypg. The standout quarterback, who has done a tremendous job of spreading the ball around, has thrown for 2,433 yards with 19 touchdowns against eight interceptions. Callender has four receiving touchdowns and eight rushing scores, proof of his versatility.
The Eagles carried the nation's top-ranked run defense into Blacksburg, as BC was only permitting 46 yards per game on the ground. Virginia Tech's starting tailback went for 97 yards on 20 carries, but big plays were hard to come by. The overall effort of the Eagles was tremendous, limiting a talented ACC team to 10 points on its home field. Opponents are scoring 16.8 ppg against Boston College, which is yielding 312.6 total ypg. Even after a subpar effort by their standards against Virginia Tech, the Eagles are still giving up a mere 55.2 rushing ypg on 2.0 ypc. Of the 13 touchdowns that BC has permitted to opposing offenses this season, just four have come on the ground. Jamie Silva leads the Eagles with five interceptions, and DeJuan Tribble is close behind with four.
