After a 6-1 start to the campaign, South Carolina has lost back-to-back decisions to fall out of contention for the SEC title. Last weekend, the Gamecocks suffered a 27-24 loss to Tennessee in overtime, and the previous loss came by double figures to Vanderbilt. Neither the Vols nor the Commodores are mentioned among the elite of the SEC, an indication that South Carolina may not be as good as many fans and analysts thought.
As for Arkansas, it has won consecutive games and four of its last five since a 1-2 start to the campaign. Last weekend, the Razorbacks took a break from SEC play and rolled to a 58-10 victory over Florida International. They have now scored 102 points in their last two outings and need one more victory to become bowl eligible.
Arkansas holds a 9-6 series edge over South Carolina, including a 26-20 victory over the Gamecocks last season.
Against Tennessee last weekend, Chris Smelley got the start once again at quarterback for South Carolina, but he struggled early on an was pulled in favor of Blake Mitchell. The veteran Mitchell completed 31-of-45 passes for 290 yards and one touchdown with one interception, and he was not sacked at all. Cory Boyd rushed for 160 yards and a touchdown on only 20 carries, a stellar performance by the tailback. As for the receivers, Kenny McKinley was nothing short of brilliant, as he recorded 14 receptions for 151 yards and a score. South Carolina finished with 31 first downs and 501 total yards, but four total turnovers led to defeat. Coach Steve Spurrier expects perfection from his quarterbacks, and it remains to be seen who takes the snaps this weekend. McKinley has made 55 catches for 676 yards and seven touchdowns this season, while Boyd has 966 total yards and six scores.
Defensively, South Carolina put forth a solid effort against Tennessee, limiting the Vols to 16 first downs and 317 total yards. Unfortunately, the defense was consistently put in tough positions by Smelley, Mitchell and the Gamecock offense. For example, the Vols' first touchdown came on a three-play, two-yard drive. Less than seven minutes later, Tennessee scored on a 44-yard drive. Opponents are posting 17.8 ppg against South Carolina, which is yielding 322.9 total ypg. The Gamecocks are surrendering 4.2 ypc, as there is room for improvement against the run. More impressive is the fact that they are holding foes to fewer than 10 yards per pass completion. Emmanuel Cook leads South Carolina with 67 tackles, while Eric Norwood is tops with 14 TFLs.
Thanks to the strong offensive performances the last two games, Arkansas has pushed its averages to 40.2 ppg and 450.9 total ypg. The Razorbacks have scored 36 offensive touchdowns, 22 of which have been rushing scores. The ground attack is one of the best in the nation, as the Hogs are pounding out 287.6 ypg and 6.0 ypc. Darren McFadden may be the best player in the nation, as the Arkansas tailback has rushed for 993 yards and 11 touchdowns while also contributing as a receiver and a quarterback at times. His backup, Felix Jones, could start for almost any other team in the nation, and he has rushed for 863 yards and eight touchdowns while averaging a stellar 8.8 ypc. For the first time in his career, McFadden rushed for four touchdowns against FIU last time out. Marcus Monk, back from injury, caught a touchdown pass, and Jones scored a touchdown as well. Nathan Emert took the majority of snaps instead of Casey Dick, who suffered a concussion, and it will be interesting to see if Houston Nutt plays Emert again this weekend.
In the first three games of the season, Arkansas surrendered 26, 41 and 42 points in succession. Since then, however, the Hogs have only yielded 49 total points in five contests. In the two SEC games played during that span, Arkansas permitted just nine points to Auburn and eight points to Ole Miss. Overall, the club is allowing 19.8 ppg and 326.5 total ypg. Matt Hewitt leads the Razorbacks with 71 total tackles, and Weston Dacus has made 70 stops. Last weekend, Arkansas permitted only 10 points and 281 total yards to FIU, as the Hogs were dominant as expected. With five interceptions and a pair of fumble recoveries, there was obviously no shortage of impact plays.
