Texas A&M has lost two of its last three games to fall to 6-3 overall, and while the squad can take solace in the fact that it is already eligible for a bowl berth, the recent slide has hurt their chances to play for the conference championship. Last weekend, the Aggies struggled offensively in a 19-11 home loss to a surprisingly strong Kansas squad.
As for Oklahoma, it has won three straight games since its only loss of the season, a three-point setback to Colorado on the road. The Sooners have been idle for two weeks, as their most recent outing resulted in a 17-7 triumph over Iowa State in a game that was closer than expected.
Oklahoma owns a 15-10 series lead over Texas A&M, including wins over the Aggies in each of the last four years.
Texas A&M was held scoreless for the first three quarters of last weekend's game against Kansas. Midway through the final frame, the Aggies capped a 16- play, 70-yard drive with a field goal, and they later reached the end zone on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Stephen McGee to Roger Holland. Unfortunately, the late surge wasn't enough to avoid defeat. Texas A&M relies heavily on its ground attack, so the fact that the club finished the game with only 74 rushing yards is surprising. McGee completed 24-of-44 passes for 244 yards with the one touchdown and no interceptions, but the only number that is important is 11, as in the total points that the Aggies managed. Texas A&M is averaging 29.8 ppg and 404.1 total ypg, as the offense has been solid for the most part. Of the 33 touchdowns that the Aggies have scored, 25 have come from a rushing attack that averages 239.4 ypg on 5.2 ypc. McGee leads the team in rushing with 722 yards, while big Jorvorskie Lane has racked up 599 yards and 15 touchdowns. As a passer, McGee has completed 55.6 percent of his throws for 1,383 yards and six touchdowns with only four interceptions.
Defensively, Texas A&M allowed 407 total yards to Kansas last weekend, including 227 rushing yards. While those figures are a bit high, it is hard to blame the defense a great deal for the loss. The Aggies managed to hold a strong conference opponent to fewer than 20 points, an accomplishment that is usually good enough to earn a victory. While A&M did finished the game with four sacks, the club failed to record a single takeaway. Opponents are scoring 22.3 ppg against the Aggies, who are surrendering 401.1 total ypg. There is room for improvement against both the run and the pass, as A&M is yielding 4.0 rushing ypc and 12.2 passing yards per completion. Mark Dodge leads the Aggies in tackles with 87.
Oklahoma is racking up 44.5 ppg and 449.1 total ypg thanks to a balanced offensive attack. It all starts with the quarterback, redshirt freshman Sam Bradford, who has basically exceeded all expectations thus far. The standout signal caller has completed 68.9 percent of his passes for 1,872 yards and 20 touchdowns with only five interceptions. He has a few outstanding receivers to utilize, and Juaquin Iglesias leads the club with 43 catches for 651 yards and four touchdowns. Malcolm Kelly has been stellar as well, as he has recorded 31 grabs for 553 yards and eight scores. There are three players with at least five rushing touchdowns, proof of Oklahoma's balance. DeMarco Murray has reached the end zone nine times, while Patrick Allen leads the team with 512 yards. In the win over Iowa State last time out, Chris Brown had a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Sooners. Bradford threw for just 183 yards and an interception in what was his least productive showing thus far.
Considering that Oklahoma is surrendering only 16.6 ppg and 298.8 total ypg, it is fair to say that the defense has held up its end of the bargain. Stopping the run has certainly been a strength of the unit, as it is limiting foes to 68.9 yards per game on 2.0 yards per carry. As for the pass defense, the Sooners have registered 14 interceptions while allowing nine passing scores. With 19 total takeaways and 26 sacks, the defense has made a high volume of impact plays. Curtis Lofton has been tremendous for Oklahoma, as he has registered 93 total tackles, 42 more than his closest teammate. Auston English deserves mention as well, as he has 8.5 sacks to his credit. While the Sooners struggled offensively against Iowa State last time out, the defense certainly did its job. The Cyclones finished with only seven points, and the lone touchdown came on a drive of just 31 yards.
