Gators try to right ship against visiting Commodores

Gainesville, FL (Sports Network) - Fresh off yet another loss, the 18th-ranked Florida Gators will attempt to bounce back in Saturday's SEC clash with the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Back-to-back victories have enabled Vanderbilt to improve to 5-3 overall, including 2-3 in SEC play. Last weekend, the Commodores took a break from conference action to post a 24-13 decision over Miami-Ohio. Vanderbilt needs just one more victory to earn bowl eligibility, but the remaining schedule is quite difficult.

Florida is fresh off a 42-30 loss to Georgia, dropping the defending national champs to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in SEC play. Three of their last four games have resulted in defeat, and they have no chance of repeating as the kings of college football. Fortunately, the remaining schedule is favorable, so a strong finish is likely. The SEC East is wide open, as every team has at least two league losses, so the Gators could conceivably end up in the SEC title game.

Florida owns a commanding 29-9-2 advantage in the all-time series with Vanderbilt, which includes a 25-19 decision over the Commodores last season.

Vanderbilt racked up 24 first downs and 411 yards of total offense in the victory over Miami-Ohio last weekend. The Commodores scored three touchdowns in the clash, all on runs. Jeff Jennings got things started in the first quarter, as his one-yard scoring plunge capped an 11-play, 68-yard drive. In the third quarter, quarterback Chris Nickson reached the end zone on a two-yard run, and the third and final touchdown came on a 15-yard scamper by Cassen Jackson- Garrison. Star receiver Earl Bennett made eight catches for 85 yards, impressive considering that Vandy only completed 11 passes for 121 yards. Bennett is now the SEC's all-time leader in receptions. Overall this season, Vandy is scoring 22.1 ppg while gaining 326.6 total ypg. The Commodores have posted 10 rushing touchdowns and 10 passing scores. Nickson has completed just 52.5 percent of his passes for 763 yards and six touchdowns with only five interceptions. Bennett may be the best receiver in the nation, and while his 54 catches for 639 yards and four touchdowns aren't the stuff of legends, he has to deal with a less-than adequate passer at quarterback. Jackson-Garrison leads the ground attack with 409 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

Defensively, Vanderbilt limited Miami-Ohio to 238 total yards and 13 points last weekend, a strong effort by any standards. After permitting at least three points in each of the first three quarters of the game, the Commodores pitched a shutout in the fourth quarter, as they played their best ball when it mattered most. Miami-Ohio posted 26 rushing yards on 27 attempts, and that stat was certainly influenced by the five sacks Vandy posted totaling 36 yards in losses. The strength of the Vanderbilt team has been the defense this season, as opponents are only scoring 17.4 ppg against the Commodores while gaining 301.0 total ypg. The run defense has been strong, permitting a mere 3.5 ypc. Even more impressive is the fact that the club has posted 14 interceptions while yielding only six passing touchdowns.

Florida is averaging 39.1 ppg and 433.4 total ypg, impressive numbers generated by an explosive offense. It all starts with the quarterback, Tim Tebow, a versatile performer who can get it done on the ground and through the air. As a passer, Tebow has completed 65.8 percent of his throws for 1,947 yards and 18 touchdowns with only three interceptions. He also leads the team in rushing with 563 yards and 12 touchdowns. The top weapon at wide receiver is Percy Harvin, as he has made 36 catches for 604 yards and three touchdowns. Florida surrendered six sacks last week, and Tebow finished with a staggering total of minus-15 yards rushing in the contest. He did throw a touchdown pass and run for a pair of scores, but the fact that the Gators managed just 343 total yards suggests that the offense did not play as well as expected. Tebow has a shoulder injury but is expected to be ready to go against Vanderbilt.

Opponents are posting 25.6 ppg against Florida, which is yielding 358.8 total ypg. For much of this season, the Gators have done an outstanding job of stopping the run, as foes are only gaining 107.1 rushing ypg on average. Unfortunately, Georgia was able to rack up 196 yards on the ground to go along with 217 passing yards last weekend. The Bulldogs scored six offensive touchdowns against Florida in what was an ugly display of defense. Perhaps the most troubling stat of all is that the Gators permitted the Dawgs to make good on 10-of-13 third down conversion attempts. Also, Florida finished the contest with a low total of one sack to go along with one takeaway. The lone bright spot for the defense was a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown by Wondy Pierre-Louis.
