Villanova overrated no more

Villanova, PA (Sports Network) - Villanova coach Andy Talley preached to the media since the first preseason top-25 poll that his No. 2-rated Wildcats were ranked too high and were overrated. Now, after a convincing 28-17 win over No. 5 William & Mary Saturday at Villanova Stadium, Talley might be singing a different tune.

Now 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the juggernaut known as the Colonial Athletic Association, the Wildcats are sitting pretty, hoping to get back to the FCS playoffs and maybe more.

Although Villanova has looked like the most complete team in the CAA as the season has progressed, Talley had been skeptical of the positive attention his team has received early.

Such skepticism started with a 27-24 victory in the season opener against crosstown FBS rival Temple and continued with a victory over Lehigh in week two.

"I think we are overrated," said Talley after that 38-17 win. "I think people rank us too high."

Now, after consecutive wins over Penn, Northeastern and the Tribe, Talley might be starting to buy into the hype, considering the long-time coach didn't mention once after the game Saturday anything about his team's high place in the top-25 poll.

"It was a real gusty performance from our guys today," said Talley. "We have been very opportunistic and our defense has been very athletic."

It's not as if Talley hasn't been confident in his squad before Saturday. But it's as if it took a win over a top-five team, that also happens to play in the CAA, to finally put it to rest that Talley's team is as good as most think they are.

With talented players like quarterback Chris Whitney, wide receiver-returnman Matt Szczur and cornerback James Pitts, it's tough to see how Talley thought of his team in that sense.

Whitney came into Saturday's game as the object of criticism lately. The junior quarterback earned a spot on the bench after a dismal start against Penn, and was almost sat down after the first half in the season-opener against Temple.

However, with a combination of his arm and quick feet, Whitney led the Wildcat offense to four touchdowns against a much-improved Tribe defense.

"Whitney makes the game work with the option and his ability to run," said Talley.

The quarterback started his day with a very unexpected flea-flicker pass on the first play from scrimmage to a wide open Brandyn Harvey (two catches, 65 yards) for a 58-yard touchdown before William & Mary could blink.

"You scheme up a few plays and practice every week," said Talley. "It's something I try to get our coordinator to call more. We had to be on a right hash to call the play and we were."

That would be Whitney's lone touchdown toss of the game, but the junior was extremely efficient passing, completing 10-of-13 passes for 146 yards and carrying the ball 10 times for 50 yards.

Szczur continued his elusive style of play, racking up 131 all-purpose yards, including a five-yard touchdown run out of the wildcat formation early in the second quarter to give Villanova a 14-0 lead.

The multi-talented junior was ranked third nationally in kickoff returns before today's game, averaging 34.1 yards and continued his effectiveness today with three returns for 75 yards.

Villanova went on to build a 21-6 lead by the half and expanded it to 28-9 on the strength of another Szczur TD run, this one from four yards out.

Pitts had the finest game of his young career this afternoon, registering a career-high 15 tackles, including 13 solo stops. The sophomore also picked up a tackle for loss on a day the Wildcats defense sacked Tribe quarterback R.J. Archer (35-of-55, 354 yards passing, TD) four times.

William & Mary moved the ball at times, but struggled on offense when it neared the red zone, mostly because of the big-play Villanova defense.

Looking at these standout performers, as well as the rest of Villanova Wildcats, it's puzzling to try and comprehend why Talley tried to keep teams and media in the dark about the capability of his squad. Perhaps it was to keep them humble? Maybe it was to keep opponents thinking? Or maybe the veteran coach had such high expectations for his players, that a 2-0, 3-0 or 4-0 start wasn't good enough for this team.

Whatever the reason was, Talley and the Villanova Wildcats look like one of the early favorites to win this season's FCS national championship.

"It was important that we broke William & Mary's will today," said Talley. "If we did that or not I'm not sure, but I know that they certainly did not break us."
