Around FCS: FAMU looks to upset Miami again

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Florida A&M fans remember the coaching tenure of Rudy Hubbard fondly, if for nothing more than two games.

Taking over in 1974, Hubbard rebuilt a FAMU squad that had fallen into disrepair after the legendary Jake Gaither retired in 1969. By the end of the decade, Hubbard had led the Rattlers to the first NCAA I-AA Football Championship in 1978 with a 35-28 victory over Massachusetts.

That capped off back-to-back seasons where the Rattlers finished 11-0 and then 12-1, a stretch of success that FAMU hasn't duplicated since.

But few people could have expected what would happen the following year. Playing Miami for the first time, Florida A&M pulled off one of the biggest upsets Football Championship Subdivision history, beating the Hurricanes 16-13 before a crowd of 34,743 fans at Florida State's Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, FL.

THE 1979 GAME

Losing 3-0 early in the game, FAMU's defense was backed up to its own 13-yard line. But cornerback Donald Shockley made a game-changing play with an interception to stop the Hurricanes' drive.

Another break occurred six plays later when starting quarterback Sammy Knight broke the lace in his shoulder pads and had to come off the field for a play. Hubbard inserted sophomore Eric Truvillon into the game and Truvillon promptly dashed 38 yards for the game's first touchdown.

Miami tied the game on another field goal and took the lead back when a Jim Burt interception set up halfback Lorenzo Roan's one-yard TD blast to make it 13-7 in the second quarter.

Before the first half ended, however, Knight - with his shoulder pads holding true - scampered into the end zone from nine yards out to tie the game at 13.

Knight, like many of his teammates, had been ignored by Miami recruiters. But on this day, Knight ran 30 times for 100 yards.

The second half settled into a defensive struggle until Vince Coleman drilled a 34-yard field goal for the Rattlers with 3:49 remaining in the fourth period to make it 16-13.

Miami had one last chance to give first-year coach Howard Schnellenberger a win and drove to a first and goal at the Rattler three with 49 seconds to play. But Roan was tackled at the line of scrimmage on the next play and FAMU batted down a Miami pass on second down.

The Hurricanes tried another pass on third down, but defensive tackle Agie Hendrieth knocked it down to save the game again.

"We've been doing that for three years," Hendrieth told reporters afterwards. "No one said much in the huddle. Your pride has to come from within."

With no overtime in college football at this time, Schnellenberger went for the tie on fourth down, sending in Dan Miller for a 20-yard field goal attempt. But the kick sailed wide left and FAMU had its upset.

THIRTY YEARS LATER

Current Florida A&M coach Joe Taylor brings an undefeated team with a seven- game winning streak into Landshark Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL. on Saturday, with four of those wins coming this season for a team that is ranked 22nd in The Sports Network's Top-25 poll.

He also brings with him a Walter Payton Award candidate in quarterback Curtis Pulley and college football's most dynamic kick returner Leroy Vann, who has four punt returns for touchdowns already this year and 10 combined scoring returns in his career.

The Miami team that FAMU is playing isn't a rebuilding one like the Rattlers met 30 years ago, it is a squad that is ranked 11th by Associated Press and is coming off a 21-20 win over Oklahoma.

But Taylor, one of college football's best coaches, isn't intimidated by all that.

"When you get up at 5:45 to prepare yourself to do battle, you always go into the game with the idea that you're going to win," Taylor said this week. "It doesn't change."

Taylor has developed a reputation for getting underdog teams fired up for such games, with his balanced emphasis on offense, defense and special teams and his no nonsense approach.

"Early on in our careers, we were told that you're really going to get what you emphasize and we emphasize all three," Taylor said. "If you're serious about competition and are trying to create a sense of success, you have to prioritize and we feel like we're organized enough for it."

Whether that is enough to score another upset like FAMU did 30 years ago, we will find out on Saturday.
