Spiders continue to roll at No. 1

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Richmond needed a second-half comeback to defeat Maine Saturday on the road, 38-21, but the Spiders didn't need much help in retaining their No. 1 ranking for the seventh straight week in The Sports Network FCS Top-25 poll.

The Spiders (6-0) received 131 of 137 first-place votes to easily stay on top and are one of six Colonial Athletic Association teams in the top-25.

Montana (6-0) defeated then-21st-ranked Eastern Washington 41-34 in a wild Big Sky Conference game to move into the second spot in the poll. The Grizzlies, who were No. 3 last week, picked up five first-place votes, but were out- polled by Richmond 3,413 to 3,191.

Eastern Washington's second loss in a row to a ranked team caused them to fall out of the top-25. The Eagles lost to then-No. 21 Weber State a week earlier.

Altogether, there were six losses among top-25 teams this weekend, including two in the top four.

For the third straight week, there was a battle of No. 2 vs No. 5 teams from The Sports Network poll and for the second week in a row, No. 5 beat No. 2. Southern Illinois (5-1) knocked off Northern Iowa 27-20 in a key Missouri Valley Football Conference game on the road and vaulted into third place with the win and earned one first-place vote.

Northern Iowa slipped to No. 6 in the poll.

Villanova (6-1) used a 27-0 blanking of James Madison, the former 16th-ranked team, to climb back two spots to No. 4. It was Villanova's first shutout on the road since 1991 and James Madison's first shutout loss at Bridgeforth Stadium since 1990.

James Madison, now 2-4 fell out of the poll for the first time since Nov. 14, 2005.

William & Mary (5-1) took the week off, but managed to sneak up two places to No.5. The Tribe returns to action at home against James Madison on Saturday.

Elon (5-1) scratched its way up one more slot to No. 7 in an off-week. The Phoenix play host to Chattanooga this weekend.

Appalachian State (4-2) used a 44-34 victory on the road against Wofford in Southern Conference play to crawl up one place to No. 8.

New Hampshire (5-1) lost for the first time this season, 23-17 at then-No. 18 Massachusetts, and tumbled from No. 4 to No. 9.

South Carolina State (5-1) won its MEAC showdown with then-No. 22 Florida A&M 35-20 at home and was rewarded with a one-spot jump to No. 10. Florida A&M was one of three teams to fall out of the poll.

There was plenty of juggling around in the second 10 again with all of the upsets.

South Dakota State (5-1) came in at No. 11, followed by McNeese State (4-2), Jacksonville State (4-2), Massachusetts (4-2) and No. 15 Stephen F. Austin (5-1).

Stephen F. Austin won against a ranked opponent for the second time in as many weeks, beating then-No. 10 Central Arkansas 33-30 in a crazy Southland Conference game. Central Arkansas (4-2) fell to No. 18, just behind Weber State (4-3) and Colgate (7-0).

No. 19 Delaware (5-2) and No. 20 Cal Poly (3-3) complete the top-20.

Closing out the poll are No. 21 Eastern Kentucky (4-2), followed by Holy Cross (5-1), Liberty (4-2), Northern Arizona (4-2) and Eastern Illinois (4-2).
