Payton Award winner Edwards among national players of the week
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards, Fordham cornerback Isa Abdul El-Quddus, Eastern Kentucky safety Patrick McClellan and Weber State receiver-returnman Tim Toone have been named The Sports Network's FCS national players of the week.OFFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Armanti Edwards, Appalachian State, Senior, 6-0, 184, QB, Greenwood, S.C.
Edwards, the 2008 Walter Payton Award winner, led Appalachian State back from a 14-point, second-half deficit with a season-high 415 yards and two touchdowns and added a third score on the ground as the Mountaineers rallied for a 44-34 road victory over Wofford on Saturday. Edwards became the Southern Conference's all-time leading passer. Edwards finished 27-of-34 passing (79.4%) and fired touchdown strikes of 27 and 57 yards to Brian Quick, the second TD pass clinching the game midway through the fourth quarter. Edwards also scored on a three-yard scamper to end the first half and finished with 14 carries for 17 yards. He engineered an offense that piled up 611 yards.
DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Isa Abdul El-Quddus, Fordham, Junior, Cornerback, 6-1, 200, Union, N.J.
Abdul El-Quddus tied a Fordham record with three interceptions and also shared for the team lead with six tackles in the Rams' 39-27 victory at Cornell on Saturday. He totaled 81 return yards on the three interceptions, including a 37-yard run back on his final pick that set up Fordham's last touchdown. Abdul El-Quddus had five solo stops and a pass breakup in the game.
Patrick McClellan, Eastern Kentucky, Safety, Sophomore, 6-3, 204 Maineville, OH.
McClellan was involved in three of Eastern Kentuckys five takeaways in the nationally-ranked Colonels 31-25 win over UT Martin. McClellan grabbed his first two collegiate interceptions, including one at his teams own 14-yard line in the third quarter. His other interception came in the first quarter as EKU built a 14-0 advantage. Late in the fourth quarter McClellan recovered a fumble on a muffed Skyhawk punt, falling on the ball at the UTM four-yard line and setting up the teams game-winning score. McClellan also added a season- high seven tackles.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tim Toone, Weber State, Senior, 5-10, 165, WR/KR, Peoria, AZ.
Toone returned a punt 95 yards for a touchdown on a day where he piled up 263 all-purpose yards with four total touchdowns to lead Weber State to a 49-10 victory over Sacramento State. Toone returned two punts for 109 yards and added eight receptions for 154 yards and three TDs of 25, five and eight yards for the Wildcats. The 95-yard punt return broke the previous Big Sky Conference and school record by one yard, beating the mark of Randle Anderson of Weber State in a 1971 game against North Texas. Toone also became the seventh player in league history to reach the 3,000 career receiving yards mark.
