Kelso Sturgeon has been a professional handicapper for 40 years and has a deep understanding of all facets of the game, be it football, basketball, baseball or horse racing. He's worked as a football scout in the SEC and studied under Hall of Fame coaches like Alabama's Bear Bryant, winner of five national titles and Hank Stram of the Kansas City Chiefs, who won the 1970 Super Bowl. He's been a Regional Sports Editor for the Associated Press, worked as a successful jockey agent and authored several books teaching people how to be a handicapper, including the bestseller, THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO SPORTS BETTING. Kelso also understands that to be a successful handicapper means knowing the business of gambling, and to that end he is personal friends with most of the big linesmakers in Las Vegas and gets the daily scoop on what is happening on the other side of the counter. Before the season started, the Appalachian State fans were mourning about the departure of quarterback Armanti Edwards to the NFL.
No one knew what to expect was ahead for the Mountaineers. Would they be able to find their way without "Mr. Everything?"
So far, so great. The Mountaineers are ranked No. 1 in The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Top 25 with a 7-0 record.
A lot of the success is based on the superb play of Edwards' replacement, junior quarterback DeAndre Presley. Trying to fill the big shoes of the two- time Walter Payton Award winner seems like history. Presley has been responsible for 24 touchdowns (14 passing, 10 rushing) and hasn't thrown an interception.
But while Presley draws attention as a Payton Award candidate himself, he's getting a lot of support.
Presley has an outstanding receivers unit led by Matt Cline, Brian Quick, Tavaris Cadet and Ben Jorden.
Each is contributing in different ways. Cline, a senior, is tied for fifth in receptions in the Southern Conference with 4.4 per game. Quick, a junior, leads the team with 487 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Cadet, a junior, is ranked No. 1 in the conference with 993 all-purpose yards. Jorden, a junior tight end, has four touchdown receptions.
The Mountaineers defense is ranked No. 5 in the conference. Senior defensive end Jabari Fletcher has been the anchor for the Mountaineers.
Head coach Jerry Moore said, "Jabari has been great for us on defense. Guys just kind of feed off his energy."
Fletcher, the SoCon defensive player of the week, has been a constant problem for opponents. He is ranked fourth in the conference with 6.5 sacks, second in tackles for loss with 11. He also has a nose for being around the football, recovering three fumbles this season.
Meanwhile, senior linebacker D.J. Smith has corralled 75 tackles to lead the team and senior safety Mark LeGree has five interceptions.
The Mountaineers won three straight FCS championships from 2005 to '07.
The Mountaineers (7-0) continue Southern Conference play on Saturday by hosting Furman (4-3) at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
