Lehigh's Lum earns second Player of Week honor

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - UT Martin quarterback Derek Carr, Lehigh quarterback Chris Lum, Prairie View A&M defensive end Adrian Hamilton, Alabama State kicker Bobby Wenzig and Towson running back Terrance West have been named The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS National Players of Week 6 for games ending Oct. 8.

CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Derek Carr, UT Martin, Junior, 6-1, 196, QB, McKenzie, TN

In completing 24-of-36 passes for 387 yards and a school-record six touchdowns, Carr led the Skyhawks to a 63-21, Ohio Valley Conference victory against Austin Peay. He fired touchdown strikes of 51, 13, 16, 15, 10 and 9 yards to break the previous Skyhawks' record of five touchdowns, set by Leonard Williams (1990) and Charles Gamble (1994). By throwing three touchdown passes in the second quarter, Carr and the UT Martin offense quickly turned a close three-point contest in the first quarter into a blowout.

Chris Lum, Lehigh, Senior, 6-2, 205, QB, Lake Orion, MI

Lum extended his streak of 300-yard passing games to seven, including all six this season, while leading Lehigh to a 30-6 victory against Bucknell in a Patriot League showdown. He completed 30-of-37 passes for 368 yards and four touchdowns. A recent addition to the Walter Payton Award (sponsored by Fathead.com) Watch List, Lum is on pace to pass for 4,354 yards and 46 touchdowns this season, both of which would be league records. This is Lum's second National Player of the Week honor.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Adrian Hamilton, Prairie View A&M, Senior, 6-3, 225, DE, Dallas, TX

While leading Prairie View A&M to a 23-20 win against Southern, Hamilton had seven tackles, forced a pair of fumbles and recorded four tackles-for-loss (two sacks). He helped limit the Jaguars to 257 yards of total offense. While leading his Southwestern Athletic Conference team in tackles (49), sacks (11) and forced fumbles (4), Hamilton has been one of the most impressive defensive linemen in the FCS this season.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Bobby Wenzig, Alabama State, Sophomore, 6-2, 180, P/K, San Diego, CA

Helping the Hornets to a 43-29 victory against Texas Southern and a jump into The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Top 25 at No. 24, Wenzig converted on all five field-goal attempts and four extra-point attempts to contribute 19 points. He connected on field goals from 37, 24, 22, 23 and 40 yards. In fact, Wenzig converted on more kicks than he had in the previous five weeks combined. He also had three punts that traveled more than 50 yards (two downed inside the 20) and averaged 65.4 yards on 10 kickoffs.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

Terrance West, Towson, Freshman, 5-11, 222, RB, Baltimore, MD

Growing up in nearby Baltimore, West was probably aware of the fact Towson had won just three games in the past two seasons. However, past history didn't matter Saturday as the freshman scored all four of the Tigers' touchdowns in an important CAA Football win against Richmond, 31-28. West also had some big carries late, toting the ball five times for 38 yards on Towson's final drive, which led to a game-winning field goal as time expired. West carried the ball 21 times for 129 yards, topping the 100-yard plateau for the first time in his career.
