Pair of CAA running backs claim national awards

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - William & Mary running back Jonathon Grimes, Indiana State defensive end Ben Obaseki, Northwestern State kick returner Phillip Harvey, Montana running back Jordan Canada and Towson running back Terrance West have been named The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS National Players of Week 7 for games ending Oct. 15.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jonathan Grimes, William & Mary, Senior, 5-10, 201, RB, Palmyra, NJ

In what could be considered a classic Grimes' performance, the senior displayed the versatility that has made him the most-decorated player in CAA Football history, compiling 323 all-purpose yards in a 24-10 win against then- No. 6 New Hampshire. Carrying the ball 28 times for 169 yards, Grimes became the all-time leading rusher in Tribe history with 3,768 yards. A dangerous weapon in the passing game as well, Grimes caught three passes for 126 yards, including a pair of long touchdowns (72 and 50 yards).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Ben Obaseki, Indiana State, Junior, 6-3, 260, DE, Washington, IN

Obaseki was a dominant force on Saturday, leading the way in a 46-24 victory against Western Illinois. Falling three tackles short of the school record, Obaseki recorded a game-high 22 tackles, five tackles for a loss and a trio of sacks. According to Indiana State, the 22 tackles were the most ever by a defensive lineman in a Missouri Valley Conference game. For the season, Obaseki leads the Sycamores with 6.5 sacks and 11 tackles for a loss.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Phillip Harvey, Northwestern State, Junior, 5-7, 161, WR, Lancaster, TX

Harvey made Southeastern Louisiana regret kicking the ball to him, as the junior had three big kickoff returns for 193 yards in a 51-17 win. He opened the second half with a 99-yard return for a touchdown to give the Demons a 34-3 lead in the Southland Conference game. Harvey also had a pair of 47-yard returns, both of which led to Northwestern State touchdowns.

CO-FRESHMEN OF THE WEEK

Jordan Canada, Montana, Freshman, 5-9, 172, RB, West Covina, CA

After registering just one carry for a negative yard in the first half, Canada rebounded in the second half to help lead the Grizzlies to a 30-24, Big Sky Conference win against Portland State. Canada carried the ball 13 times in the second half for 160 yards and a touchdown. The freshman almost set up another touchdown after galloping away for a 75-yard gain to Portland State's 2-yard line.

Terrance West, Towson, Freshman, 5-11, 222, RB, Baltimore, MD

Rushing for 148 yards and two touchdowns against Old Dominion, West earned Freshman of the Week honors for the second straight week. He scored on pair of long runs (47 and 54 yards) in the 39-35 win, which kept Towson a perfect 3-0 in the CAA and 5-0 against FCS competition. With 11 rushing touchdowns, West is the FCS' leader in scoring for freshmen and third overall.
