Cuff carries Delaware past Northeastern

Newark, DE (Sports Network) - With Delaware pinned at its own eight-yard line and the game with Northeastern still in the balance on Saturday afternoon, the Blue Hens strapped themselves onto the back of Omar Cuff once again.

And Cuff delivered enough body blows on the Husky defense for 15th-ranked Delaware to complete a 30-20 Colonial Athletic Association victory before a homecoming crowd of 21,570 at Tubby Raymond Field.

Cuff had already scored three touchdowns, tying the Delaware single-season record, but it was his work on the Blue Hens' final 90-yard drive that helped seal the win.

With Cuff carrying on all but a couple of plays Delaware moved from its own eight to the Husky two and Jon Striefsky's 19-yard field goal with 1:35 left finally put the game out of reach.

"We needed to pound it out," said Cuff, who rushed 39 times for 200 yards and added two catches for 33 yards. "And we pounded it out on that last drive."

Coming off its first loss of the season last week at New Hampshire, Delaware rebounded to improve to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the CAA. Northeastern missed a big upset for the second straight week, falling to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the CAA a week after losing at home to James Madison by a touchdown.

After struggling with execution in the first half, the Blue Hens put things together in the second half to score on all three of their possessions. Northeastern couldn't keep up the pace, managing only one second-half touchdown.

"That was a typical CAA game," said Delaware coach K.C. Keeler. "The other team punches you in the mouth and you punch them back."

Cuff gave the Blue Hens the lead seven minutes into the third quarter at 20-14 with an 11-yard scamper.

Cuff turned a screen pass from Joe Flacco (17-of-26, 222 yards, one TD and one interception) into a 25-yard scoring strike just a minute into the fourth period, spinning his way like a helicopter for the final yards as he leaped into the end zone to make it 27-20.

Maurice Murray (26 carries, 95 yards) completed an impressive Northeastern march with a one-yard burst with 1:10 left in the third period. But Mat Johnson's extra points was blocked to leave the game tied and set the scene for Cuff's fourth-quarter heroics.

The Huskies had one more chance to tie it after Cuff's touchdown reception, but after moving to the Delaware 38 faced a 4th-and-2, Northeastern coach Rocky Hager decided to punt and pin the Blue Hens deep.

The punt part worked, but the thing about stopping Cuff and getting the ball back didn't until it was too late.

Northeastern used a combination of a ball-control attack and a blitzing defense to forge a 14-13 halftime lead.

After Delaware opened the game with a nine-play, 44-yard drive and Striefsky's 37-yard field goal, Northeastern answered in a big way on their second possession.

Anthony Orio (18-of-23, 198 yards, one TD) hit Brian Mandeville in a seam and the brawny tight end galloped the rest of the way for a 76-yard scoring connection to give the Huskies their first lead, 7-3 with under seven minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Delaware responded with a touchdown drive of its own, going seven plays and 61 yards, with Cuff powering in from the two for his 22nd TD of the year.

The Blue Hens' 10-7 advantage lasted until midway in the second period when Northeastern methodically pounded its way down the field, going 58 yards in 11 plays.

Murray's two-yard blast made it 14-10 for the Huskies, but Delaware answered with a 12-play, 48-yard march that led to Striefsky's successful 31-yard kick to bring Delaware within one point.

Northeastern forged back into Delaware territory with 30 seconds left in the first half, but with two timeouts remaining, the Huskies inexplicably let the clock run out and settled for that 14-13 halftime lead.

That decision would end up haunting the Huskies in the final minutes when that final Delaware drive put the game away.
