Hofstra grinds out win over Towson

Towson, MD (Sports Network) - For one half Saturday afternoon at Towson, Hofstra didn't look anything like a top-10 team.

But after sleepwalking through 30 minutes of play, the No. 10 Pride wore Towson out in the second half for a 20-3 victory to ruin the day for 7,856 homecoming fans at Johnny Unitas Stadium.

Hoftsra's defense limited the Tigers to 85 yards, no points and forced three turnovers in the second half to turn a 3-3 halftime draw into a 17-point victory.

The Pride (6-0, 3-0 CAA) turned all three of the turnovers into points, scoring on TD runs of four and 66 yards by Kareem Huggins, who had 24 carries for a career-high 186 yards. All-American kicker Rob Zarilli also kicked a 35- yard field goal after a turnover.

"We've got some warriors," said Hofstra's second-year coach Dave Cohen. "We've got a tenacious team that is going to continue to attack."

The game was about as even as possible in the first half, with Zarilli hitting a 21-yard field goal in the first quarter and Towsons Mark Bencivengo nailing a 37-yard kick in the second period. Bencivengo also had a kick blocked from 39 yards out and Zarilli missed from 52 yards in the second quarter.

Towson quarterback Sean Schaefer was harassed throughout the day, passing for a career-low 123 yards after hitting 13-of-26 attempts. He was intercepted twice and sacked four times.

But the Tigers (3-4, 1-3), who had pulled out a 23-21 on the final play of the game last week against Richmond, still had a chance for some similar heroics when Schaefer got the ball back with four minutes left.

Three plays later, with Schaefer trying to make a big play on a deep ball, Hofstra free safety David Darby picked it off at the Pride 32 to kill Towson's last threat.

"They pressured us all day," said Towson coach Gordy Combs. "Sean was running for his life."

Two plays later, Huggins plowed through the line and raced 66 yards for the clinching touchdown.

"I'm going to keep playing until the clock says 0:00," said Huggins, who now has 783 yards rushing on the season. "I'm going to keep coming at you for four quarters."

Huggins had help from Hofstra quarterback Bryan Savage, who was 24-of-38 for 301 yards, despite being sacked five times and intercepted twice.

All-American linebacker Gian Villante led Hofstra's big defensive effort with eight tackles and a pair of pass breakups. Linebacker Brian Bradford had 13 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles, an interception and a pass breakup for the Tigers.

The loss ended Towson's hopes of reaching the playoffs, one of the major goals for a team that came within a win of reaching the postseason last year.

"I'm concerned we didn't compete," said Combs. "We just didn't have the spark we needed."

Hofstra, which finished 2-9 overall and 1-7 in the Atlantic 10 last season, is basking in its surprising turnaround.

"I don't think there were any nonbelievers in the four walls of our locker room," said Cohen. "When it was time to make plays, we did what we needed to do."
