No surprise, San Diego still No. 1 in Mid-Major poll
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - San Diego ransacked Jacksonville 62-23 on Saturday night to improve to 7-0 and remained the unanimous No. 1 pick in the Sports Network Mid-Major poll on Monday.The Toreros have four games left in the regular season, including a Nov. 17 test at UC Davis, as they attempt to become the first team to win the Sports Network Cup for the third time.
San Diego, which was 26th in voting this week in the Sports Network Top 25 poll, would win the Pioneer Football League and earn a spot in the second annual Gridiron Classic on Dec. 1 by winning its final three PFL games.
Should the Toreros be chosen to participate in the FCS playoffs, the runner-up from the PFL would play in the Gridiron Classic, which San Diego won 27-7 over Monmouth last year.
Dayton (7-1) remained No. 2 in the Mid-Major poll with a convincing 33-7 victory over Valparaiso to set up a battle for a share of first place in the PFL Saturday at home. Dayton and Morehead State are one game behind San Diego at 3-1 in the PFL.
In the Mid-Major game of the week, Central Connecticut State (5-2) defeated Wagner 21-13 in a fight for a share of the Northeast Conference lead and the Blue Devils were rewarded by remaining third in the new poll.
Wagner (5-2) fell from fifth to seventh with the loss.
Also dropping was Drake (5-3), which was upset by Davidson 24-21 on the road. The Bulldogs fell from No. 4 to No. 6 on a night where they gave up an NCAA- record three safeties in the first quarter and a 20-yard game-winning field goal with 1:24 left.
Davidson (4-3) moved into the 10th spot in the poll with the victory.
Albany (4-3) moved up two spots to No. 4 with a 58-21 crushing of St. Francis and Duquesne (5-2) also jumped two positions to No. 5 by edging Robert Morris 17-14. Robert Morris slipped to 3-5 with another close loss and tumbled out of the top-10 after being ranked 10th last week.
Iona (5-2) remained No. 8 on an off-week and Morehead State (5-2) stayed at No. 9 by beating Butler 24-3.
The Sports Network FCS Mid-Major Top 10 poll includes the 20 programs of the MAAC, NEC, and Pioneer Leagues, which play at a non-scholarship or limited scholarship level. An updated poll, which is based on the votes of selected media members and FCS mid-major Sports Information Directors, is announced each Monday during the regular season.
