Record-setting QB performance highlights FCS players of the week

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Portland State quarterback Drew Hubel, Harvard defensive back Doug Hewlett, Eastern Kentucky defensive back Derrick Huff and Tennessee Tech returnman/receiver Larry Shipp were selected Monday as national players of the week by the Sports Network.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Drew Hubel, Portland State, Freshman, Quarterback, 6-5, 195, Corvallis, Ore.

A true freshman, making his first college start, Hubel tied the FCS record for touchdown passes in one game with nine in a wild 73-66 loss to Weber State. He tied Willie Totten of Mississippi Valley State for the record. Totten threw nine TD passes on Sept. 1, 1984 against Kentucky State. Hubel had scoring throws of 12, 15, 21, 28, 22, 9, 22, 15 and 8 yards. He finished 35-of-56 for 485 yards with no interceptions from the Vikings' run and shoot offense. Hubel hit Tremayne Kirkland and David Lewis for four scores each and added another to Kenneth Mackins. The nine TD passes is an NCAA record for a freshman and broke Neil Lomax's school record of eight. It also shattered the Big Sky record of seven scoring strikes. Hubel had hit 13-of-17 passes for 111 yards and one TD in two other appearances off the bench this season. The 141 points for the two teams broke the Big Sky and FCS records for most points scored by two teams. The previous best had been 125 in Sacramento State's 64-61 victory over Cal State Northridge on Nov. 4, 2000.
