The victory was Stewart's third of the season and 27th of his Nextel Cup career.
"They sound pretty quiet when they are dead stick like that," said Stewart. "We came off turn two and it went flat. I just shut it off...and watched where the leaders were."
Kasey Kahne led the field to the green flag for 267 laps of racing. He and Jimmie Johnson were showing the early speed although Matt Kenseth was working his way through the top-10 to join them at the front.
Lap 16 saw a dramatic spin by Ryan Newman who was near the lead after not pitting on the previous caution. Jeff Burton, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Gordon all made great moves to avoid the spinning Dodge and keep their championship hopes alive.
Another early caution flag came out when Reed Sorenson slammed the outside wall in turn three of lap 20.
Following the caution flags and adjustments, Scott Riggs' Dodge looked strong and on lap 29 he took his first lead of the day. Then "hometown" favorite Clint Bowyer took the lead as Kahne and Johnson seemed content to ride along in the top-10 and conserve their race cars.
Next to take a turn on the lead was Dale Earnhardt Jr. who was first off pit road after a debris caution on lap 61. Then Kyle Busch earned the five bonus points for leading a lap.
Busch was still leading as the field passed the 100-lap mark. Also of note was Gordon's return to the top-10 after his early spin to avoid an accident. He was sixth at the 100-lap mark and the fastest car on the track.
Just past the halfway point, the "Chase" drivers all began to make their way into the top-10 for the fight down the stretch. Only Harvick, Kenseth and Denny Hamlin were not competitive and all three sat outside the top-15.
Bowyer was now showing the way, but Johnson and Busch were just behind and looking strong. Lap 167 and Johnson went by Bowyer for the lead and with four new tires began to pull away from the No.7 Chevrolet. Bowyer tried to keep up, but he got loose and slid up the track into the wall to bring out another caution flag.
Again Johnson began to pull away expanding the margin between himself and Busch to 1.116 seconds at lap 190 and 1.956 second at lap 194 when J.J. Yeley spun to bring out caution No.11.
It was now decision time for crew chiefs. They were almost within range of the checkered flag in one tank of fuel and it would be the last chance to make chassis adjustments.
Johnson and the No.48 Hendrick Motorsports crew won the race of pit road but eight of 10 "Chase" drivers were in the top-15. Kenseth, suffering rear end problems, was 28th and Busch was penalized for speeding on pit lane and sat 29th.
With 66 laps to go, Greg Biffle slid around Johnson for the lead, but two laps later Johnson returned the favor. Johnson's lead was 1.703 seconds with 50 laps remaining. He was pouring it on and at lap 225 the gap had ballooned to 3.401 seconds over Biffle. Burton got by Biffle for second place with 37 laps to go, but was 4.623 seconds back.
It appeared that some drivers were trying to save fuel to reach the end, while Johnson was going full bore. Stewart, not in the "Chase" and going only for wins, got around Biffle as well.
Lap 241 and Gordon coasted onto pit lane with a fuel problem. It would cost him dearly. He would finish 39th.
Johnson was still leading by five seconds as the field passed the 245-lap mark. Three laps later he clinched the bonus for most laps led. But could he reach the checkered flag without stopping. It appeared that everyone would have to stop.
Or would they?
Harvick came in. Earnhardt Jr. came in. Burton stopped. But Stewart said he was going to stay out. Ten laps to go and Johnson was still racing. With five laps to go, Kahne ran out of fuel. Johnson came in one lap later for a splash and go, but Stewart inherited the lead.
Stewart's lead was 17 seconds with one lap to go, but he started to weave from side to side. Stewart was out of fuel! But the No.20 still had enough speed to reach the finish line.
Did anyone have enough speed to catch him?
Mears was in second place, but he too ran out of fuel and was coasting to the finish. And that was the race.
Mark Martin, Dale Jarrett and Burton completed the top-five.
Johnson finished 14th after being penalized for speeding during his final pit stop.
Burton's fifth-place finish earned him a 69-point lead over Hamlin and 70 points over Martin in the championship with seven races remaining on the schedule.
Race No.4 in the 10-race "Chase for the Nextel Cup" is scheduled for Sunday, October 8th at the Talladega Superspeedway.
