College Football Weekend Recap

Monday Night, Virginia Tech marched 75 yards right down the field to score a touchdown on their opening drive and never looked back - while the FSU Seminoles self-destructed at every turn with five turnovers along with a blocked punt snatched up for another Hokie touchdown. As we figured, rusty QB Deondre Francois (three interceptions) was miserable from start to finish and the Virginia Tech defense played a real bend-but-don't-break style while waiting for FSU to implode. Like we said, easy-breezy! Gotta say right here that there's lots more winners on tap for this big week:

There's the start of the NFL season beginning Thursday night with that out-of-the-box titanic showdown between the Atlanta Falcons at the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles (and the rest of the NFL Week 1 card ain't too shabby either!) plus the college kids are all revved up for another big week starting with Thursday's TCU at SMU tilt and keep in mind this Saturday's college menu features the likes of Georgia at South Carolina, Colorado at Nebraska and Clemson at Texas A&M? Can't wait!

In other College Football News / Notes ...
No giant surprise that NCAA Football Favorites and Underdogs pretty much split their pointspread verdicts this opening weekend - heck, we've been telling you for 25 years now that most weeks the Favs / Dogs breakdown usually is a 50/50 type deal but keep in mind overall the Favs registered a 23-21-1 ATS (against the spread) mark for a .523 winning rate and there was "no harm" when it came to double-digit betting favorites who went 13-14 ATS overall on a first weekend where there were plenty of bloated pointspreads ...

On the field, there's great (and growing) concern regarding the not-so-mighty Michigan Wolverines who entered this current campaign ranked #14 in the land. True, we don't love the fact that Michigan alum / Big 10 Network analyst Braylon Edwards "went off" on his alma mater and specifically called out the team's quarterback and at least one offensive lineman but under fourth-year head coach Jim Harbaugh this crew - and it's been well documented - can't beat rivals Michigan State / Ohio State / Notre Dame and how about the fact in the Harbaugh Era the maize-and-blue is a crummy 18-21-1 versus the vig? Did you know "Big Blue" went 25-24-1 ATS in the four-year run of head coach Brady Hoke (see 2011-14)? Interesting stuff, indeed. Now, Michigan is a four-TD betting favorite this weekend against overmatched Western Michigan and then come home games against SMU and Nebraska. Heck, if the Wolverines are not 3-1 SU (straight-up) and at least 2-2 versus the vig when they head to Northwestern on Sept. 29th, then Harbaugh's really gonna be feeling some heat ...

Okay, so Michigan's boss-man has been in place for a few years now but what about the first-year head coaches?

The debuts of UCLA's Chip Kelly, Arizona's Kevin Sumlin, Tennessee's Jeremy Pruitt and Florida State's Willie Taggart were major flops this past weekend but how about a shout-out to Arizona State's Herm Edwards? The one-time NFL head coach - who had not strolled a sideline since 2008 - had his 17.5-point favored Sun Devils in prime form en route to a 49-7 win against UTSA. Edwards - who famously uttered the words "You play to win the game" years ago when boss-man of the New York Jets - may be a real revelation on the college scene and so we'll be keeping a close eye on his guys who venture on the road to play Michigan State this Saturday. P.S., Arizona State last year went 5-2-1 ATS as underdogs.

NFL WEEK 1 NOTES
In case you're wondering, last year the New England Patriots were the defending Super Bowl champions and they registered a solid 11-7-1 ATS mark "the year after" while back in 2016 it was the Denver Broncos fresh off a Super Bowl-winning season and the Broncs snagged a 9-7 ATS mark the "year after". Will this year's Philly Eagles be profit-makers or money-burners this time? ...

Sticking with an NFC East squad, the Washington Redskins open their 2018 campaign at Arizona this Sunday but did you know the 'Skins have failed to cover the spread in each of their past five season-opening games? Note that Washington - right now a 1-point pup against the Cardinals - has failed to cover three of its last four games against the Redbirds while dating back to the 2011 season.

Finally, QB news all been all the rage this week with word that the New York Jets will start 21-year-old Sam Darnold in Monday Night's game at Detroit while Buffalo will go with Nathan Peterman for the Week 1 tilt in Baltimore. For what it's worth, the J-E-T-S are 5-12-4 spreadwise away pre-Darnold these past three-plus seasons while the Bills actually went 7-3-1 spreadwise in 2017 when playing non-AFC East foes ... and one of the spread losses was Peterman's five-INT loss at the Los Angeles Chargers.
