Saturday Preseason

Is there a Super Bowl team or teams playing out there on this evening of Saturday, August 10th?

There's only three games on the Saturday night card that wraps up NFL Preseason Week 1 proceedings but the Kansas City Chiefs (they're home to Cincinnati), the defending NFC champion Los Angeles Rams (they are at Oakland) and the Dallas Cowboys (playing in San Francisco) all believe they have the "chops" to make it all the way to Super Bowl 53. Then again, everyone's allowed to "dream" at the very start of each gridiron campaign.

NFL PRESEASON WEEK 1 -
On Saturday Nite, it's ...

CINCINNATI at KANSAS CITY - 8 p.m. ET
The uptodate Super Bowl Win It All Odds for these '19 Chiefs has KC in the 6-to-1 range - not bad - but there's a slew of questions that must be answered here including whether or not this is a championshipcaliber defense. Last year the Chiefs finished nexttolast in the league in total defense (allowed 405.5 yards per game) and a lowly 24th in scoring defense (surrendered 26.3 points per game) and so in comes new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and out goes doddering Bob Sutton. We'll see if the KayCee pass rush - tied for first place in the league with 52 sacks a year ago - is gonna be better with DL Frank Clark and without exiled Dee Ford and Justin Houston (they combined for 22 sacks last year) and here the "newlook" Chiefs defense comes after new Bengals' boss Zac Taylor's newlook offense. Does the totals price of 36.5 points appear "too low"?

LOS ANGELES RAMS at OAKLAND - 8 p.m. ET
Let's just say we were not all that excited about episode #1 of HBO's Hard Knocks as it sure seems to us that head coach Jon Gruden's club has another knucklehead team on hand - yet the oddsmakers have Oakland a 4.5-to-5.5point betting favorite for this clash against a Rams squad that will be sitting out most / all of their regulars. Right now the Rams are listed at 10-to-1 to win it all this year - one year after getting booted 133 by New England in SB 52 - but an X factor here and all year long may well be RB Darrell Henderson, a thirdround draftee from Memphis who's had a heavy workload in practices / OTAs this year.

DALLAS at SAN FRANCISCO - 9 p.m. ET
The Cowboys are at 20-to-1 odds to win it all next February but they could be 1,000-to-1 if they don't soon resign painintheneck RB Ezekiel Elliott: Right now the two sides are at a major loggerheads and names such as Darius Jackson, Mike Weber and Jordan Chunn (say who!!!) appear on the team's current depth chart while heading into this clash on the left coast. One thing to watch here for the 'Boys: Kicker Brett Maher has been crazy inconsistent in the days leading up to this exhibition game and so newcomer Kasey Redfern could get an opportunity or two to place some additional heat on Maher here.

In other NFL Preseason Week 1 action ...

A major feelgood moment happened in Buffalo on Thursday night where the Bills torpedoed the 2-point favorite Indianapolis Colts 24-16. Rookie / rugby star Christian Wade galloped 65 yards for a touchdown on his firstever play and perhaps the Buffalo ground game expected to start old war horses Frank Gore and LeSean McCoy can add Wade and Florida Atlantic rookie Devin Singletary (48 offensive yards from scrimmage) to the mix ...

On Friday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers - who have a real battle going for Ben Roethlisberger's backup quarterback between Mason Rudolph (91 yards passing with two TDs) and Josh Dobbs (85 yards passing and 44 yards rushing on two carries) - got an upclose and personal look at rookie LB Devin Bush who registered 10 total tackles including seven solo stops in one half. Bush - the #10 overall pick from Michigan - could be a real missing puzzle piece for a Pittsburgh team sorely lacking highquality linebacker play the past two or three years ...

Finally, Minnesota's 34-25 win at 3point favorite New Orleans featured an 8-play, 81yard scoring drive engineered by Minny's starting QB Kirk Cousins as he completed all four of his aerial attempts. Cousins has more pressure on 'em than any NFL quarterback this year and so don't discount the import of even this preseason for the veteran slinger ...

Pointspread Update: Thru Friday's action, NFL Preseason Betting Favorites are 6-6-2 ATS (against the spread) this year with the New York Giants (+1.5), Buffalo (+2), Tennessee (+1.5), Carolina (+3), Seattle (+2.5) and Minnesota (+3) all snagging outright upset wins thus far.
