A Perfect 4-0 NFL Sunday
Want to know who really "took a bath" in NFL Week 10 action yesterday? Of course, it was all the guys / gals who included the New Orleans Saints and / or the Indianapolis Colts in their silly three-team teasers on Sunday and anyone else that used the aforementioned Saints or Colts in their office "knockout" pools.
As it turned out, there were six outright upset winners on the NFL's Sunday card - plus don't forget the Oakland Raiders' 26-24 home win versus the 1.5-point favored Los Angeles Chargers last Thursday night - and so that made it seven outright dog winners in all. Ahh, those money line folks had a blast in those six games ... check it out:
Tennessee (+ 200) def. Kansas City 35-32
New York Jets (+ 135) def. New York Giants 34-27
Atlanta (+ 600) def. New Orleans 26-9
Miami (+ 450) def. Indianapolis 16-12
Pittsburgh (+ 180) def. Los Angeles Rams 17-12
Minnesota (+ 155) def. Dallas 28-24
And last Thursday Nite,
Oakland (+ 105) def. Los Angeles Chargers 26-24
Tonight, it's ... SEATTLE (7-2) at SAN FRANCISCO (8-0) - 8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN
Here's what you really need to know about this here-and-now unbeaten San Fran 49ers team: They rank #1 in the league in total defense (allowing 241 yards per game) and rank a better-than-you-think sixth in the NFL in total offense (averaging 390.3 ypg). Better yet: The Niners have won their eight games by a per-game scoring margin average of 16.6 points. Yes, you can call that dominant.
Then don't ask us why there are still doubters out there - and there are - but we will say that if San Francisco wins / covers this prime-time tilt against the rival Seahawks (the Niners are 6.5-point favorites at last look) then maybe those doubters will finally shush!
The game plan here for SF is get after still-elusive QB Russell Wilson (2,505 yards passing with 22 TDs and 1 INT to go along with 203 rushing yards and 3 ground scores) with a pass rush that has a never-ending motor and these days stars rookie DE Nick Bosa (seven sacks). On the flip side, the 'Hawks have not fared well on "D" against the pass - they rank 28th in the NFL in pass defense - and so do not be surprised if SF head coach Kyle Shanahan has QB Jimmy Garoppolo zippin' it early and often.
Spread Notes - San Francisco is 5-3 ATS (against the spread) overall this year but note the 49ers are an ugly 3-11-1 vig-wise against Seattle dating back to the middle of 2011; The Seahawks are 4-5 against the odds this '19 season but they're 9-1-1 ATS as dogs since late in the 2017 campaign.
Here's some other NFL Week 10 observations ...
Don't think the heat's gonna get turned up uber-high on New York Giants' second-year head coach Pat Shurmur? Think again. The team's above-mentioned touchdown loss to the "rival" NY Jets - 1-7 SU (straight-up) while heading into this Gotham City clash - featured the following abysmal stats: RB Saquon Barkley rushed for one total yard on 13 rushing attempts and the J-E-T-S scored 10 more points than their highest game total this year (see 24-22 win against Dallas back in Week 6). The G-men have a bye this week and so expect two full weeks of hell raging by the NYC-area media against the unpopular Shurmur. Even money says he's a goner before we ever get to Week 17 this year ...
Let's expose a couple of things here in terms of offensive lines: The defending NFC champion Rams don't have a very good one anymore, the Saints' O-line is highly overrated these days and the Arizona Cardinals' blocking wall better improve soon or rookie QB Kyler Murray (324 yards passing with 3 TDs in 30-27 loss-but-cover at Tampa Bay) will be running for his life on a weekly basis ...
Last night's 28-24 Minnesota win at 3-point fav Dallas had its own shocking moments: Like Cowboys' RB Zeke Elliott (20 carries for 47 yards) unable to pop one late when Dallas played around too much with trying to milk the clock and score the potential go-ahead TD - that last drive wasn't the finest hour for Elliott or OC Kellen Moore ...
Finally, NFL Betting Favorites registered a 3-8-1 ATS mark in Week 10 games while heading into tonight's Seahawks vs.49ers bash and that means the up-to-the-minute figure on the year is NFL Favs are 60-81-3 with three Pick 'Em games. That's right, NFL chalk is cashing at a lousy .426 winning rate.
THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK
Hey, we never needed any convincing that the LSU Tigers were the numero uno in College Football this year! Heck, we've ranked the Bayou Bengals at #1 for several weeks now and last Saturday's thoroughly entertaining 46-41 win at Alabama just cemented our beliefs.
The amazing thing about LSU's snap-busting win - remember they had lost eight in a row to the hated Crimson Tide - is that Heisman Trophy favorite QB Joe Burrow never (as in not once) was rattled en route to his 31-of-39, 393-yard, 3-TD performance that included a tuck-it-and-run first down late in the game that helped to ice the road win. Folks, we'll go as far to say that Burrow's brilliant showing was the best we've seen at that position in a college game since the days of Texas' Vince Young ... and that's really saying something!
Meanwhile, Penn State's 31-26 loss at 6.5-point pup Minnesota likely kayoed the Nittany Lions from any / all discussions when it comes to this year's College Football Playoffs and - unlike LSU's Burrow - Penn State slinger Sean Clifford (three picks) didn't come up big plus the Penn State "D" was a major mess while allowing 449 total offensive yards versus Minnesota. Note that Penn State still has that upcoming road game at Ohio State, so what say a Citrus Bowl berth for James Franklin's club? Hmmm.
Okay, let's wrap up this baby with a Veterans Day "salute" to College Football's hottest spread sides from the so-called Power Conferences (obviously, all figures below are against the spread) ...
Florida is 5-1-1 since Sept. 21 and that includes last weekend's rollicking 56-0 win against hapless Vanderbilt
Illinois has reeled off five consecutive pointspread wins including that 37-34 come-from-way-behind win at Michigan State
Iowa State's covered four of its last five outings including that 42-41 loss-but-cover at two-TD Oklahoma this past weekend
Kansas State has banged out four consecutive spread wins since mid-October
Minnesota is 6-0 versus the vig since late September
Ohio State sports a current eight-game ATS winning streak
Tennessee - believe it or not - has now covered its last five games in a row and
Utah has crushed the number in its last five games while laying points in all five of the tilts
