Handicapping the college basketball tournaments is akin to having a picnic in the jaws of a hurricane. The Penn State Nittany Lions are the poster child of a long list of teams that were supposed to lose but failed to follow that script. Penn State opened the Big Ten Tournament as a 5.5-point favorite over Northwestern and won, 65-57. The came right back last night as a 5.5-point underdog to Ohio State and beat the 13th-ranked Buckeyes for the third time this season, 69-68.

Let there be no doubt about it, Penn State (21-12) wants it and gets the acid test today as it takes on Purdue (27-5) in the Big Ten semifinals from Madison Square Garden. Win or lose, it is going to be difficult for the NCAA selection committee to ignore the Lions. Purdue and Penn State met in West Lafayette during the regular season and the former prevailed 76-73 as a 9-point favorite.

There are several things that have emerged thus far during the post-season.

  • Both #2 Michigan State (29-3) and #8 Purdue need to turn it up a bit today to beat their opponents. As noted, Purdue hosts fired-up Penn State while Michigan State meets arch-rival, #15th-ranked  Michigan (26-7) in the other Big Ten semifinal. During the regular season Michigan beat the Spartans on their home floor in East Lansing, 82-72, as 9.5-point underdogs.
  • There is true parity in college basketball and every single team that takes the floor can win or at least cover. There is a reason underdogs have gone 21-13 the past three days and stand 38-26 thus far in post-season play.
  • You can do everything right and still lose. A perfect example of this was my 10-unit play on Navy (-8) over Holy Cross. The latter took down he money, upsetting the Midshipmen, 81-65, as it shot 68% (25-of-37) from the floor.
  • Every underdog that pulls off a major upset is a strong go-against team the next time it plays.

Saturday’s Best Bet College Winners For March 3

(Because these selections are made 2-3 days in Advance Kelso has the option to change any of them should Changing circumstances merit it) Home Teams In CAPS…All Plays 5 Units

GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS (12-18) -2 by 8-9 over Wake Forest Demon Deacons (11-18)—Georgia Tech is no world beater but has a giant edge over a dreadful Wake Forest team that is but 9-18 ATS this season.

PROVIDENCE FRIARS (18-12) -5 by 9-10 over St. John’s Red Storm (15-15)—Providence is playing for a decent seeding in the Big East Tournament and more so a spot in the NCAA Tournament and will be all in today against a St. John’s team that may be without guard Shamorie Ponds (abdominal injury) who averages 21.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.86 assists per game.

SYRACUSE ORANGE (18-12) -1.5 by 6-7 over Clemson Tigers (22-7)—Syracuse is another team battling for an NCAA Tournament bid and will be all-in today against an over-rated Clemson team. The home court edge gets it done in this one.

KANSAS STATE WILDCATS (20-10) -1.5 by 6-7 over Baylor Bears (18-12)—This is another showdown game and my figures suggest the Kansas State defense (67.5 points per game) and the home floor edge will put the Wildcats in the winner’s circle.

Kansas Jayhawks (24-6) -5 by 10-11 over OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS (17-13)—Kansas is playing its best basketball right now, is shooting for a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and has all the tools to get it done today in Stillwater.
